On our drive back from Calistoga to Berkeley, my bestie and I needed a quick snack, and this stop in St. Helena was perfectly timed. She’s been here plenty of times; it was my first visit.
I went the smoothie route (solid, refreshing, did the job), but I couldn’t help noticing that most people were walking out with pizza. That seemed to be the move.
The place had a steady flow of locals and road-trippers, which is always a good sign when you’re pulling off the highway.
It was quick, easy, and exactly what we needed in the moment. Will I be back? Probably not, but this might be perfect for you.
Their coffee drinks used to be much higher quality with a typical multi-group espresso machine and a skilled barista. Nowadays they have unfortunately regressed to a fully automatic machine with a noticeable quality difference. Though they are using Napa local Naysayer coffee beans which is a nice touch.
Staff is friendly and always helpful.
Okay, so Station St. Helena is a gas station, but don’t let that fool you—it’s also a sandwich shop with aspirations of grandeur. Yes, you’re filling up your car, but you could also be filling up your stomach with a sandwich that’ll make you question if you’re actually in a Michelin-star restaurant. It’s a little on the pricey side for what you’re getting, but hey, it’s a gourmet gas station, so who am I to complain?
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much beyond fuel and maybe a stale bag of chips. Instead, I was hit with a perfectly crafted sandwich that was almost too beautiful to eat (but I did anyway). The flavors were bold, the ingredients fresh—clearly, they’ve mastered the art of fancy sammies.
Would I return? Absolutely, but maybe just for a snack, not a full-blown lunch. It’s a treat… for your taste buds and your wallet!
