I strolled in, phone in hand, ready to claim my caffeinated treasure with the confidence of someone who has done this a thousand times. Yet, my grand entrance was met with…silence. I half expected tumbleweeds to roll by as I stood there, ignored, unlike the other caffeine seekers who were welcomed like celebrities. My order status was clear: “ready,” and yet, it felt as elusive as a mythical creature.
Realizing my macchiato might need a search party, I bravely approached the counter. The barista gave me the kind of look reserved for surprise pop quizzes. I gave my name, and voilà, my order appeared. But alas, the cream cheese was MIA. I pointed this out, and with Oscar-worthy theatrics, the barista slumped her shoulders as if I’d just revealed a plot twist in her day.
She retrieved the cream cheese, then asked to see the order sticker on the bag, implying that perhaps my bagel was trying to smuggle contraband. Just when I thought the saga was over, I requested a knife. Cue the dramatic sigh, suggesting I had asked for the secret of life itself.
I typically enjoy having fun conversations with baristas and making sure they know they’re appreciated, with tips that could fund a small island—$5 for just a drink, $7 to $10 for a drink and something to eat, and even more when ordering for a group. Even when they are busy and a bit short, I understand they’re just in the rush-zone and always tip accordingly. But this experience was a first—I left without tipping, a rarity in my caffeine chronicles.
Here’s hoping this tale brings about more smiles than slumps and sighs. As for me, I’ll be sipping my future lattes elsewhere, avoiding coffee drama (and quite possibly an acting class).
