original: today i went in and ordered a pink drink with light cold foam. The guy who was at drive thru was nice about it but the girl who was working with him was being snarky saying what’s the point of ordering with light cold foam. As someone who is also a barista at a different starbucks I know exactly why I order with light cold foam (as i want half an inch or so of foam, not over an inch like some baristas do) so for her to catch an attitude is crazy, like come say it to my face. Anyways this is the same lady who every single time i visited over the summer refused to shake my refreshers and once again as a barista I can taste the difference. I’ve complained about her to corporate many times and unfortunately she’s still there. as of today, she had bold makeup on, she’s a light skin with super curly hair and glasses. Otherwise, every other barista here is very sweet.
A Black woman, clearly either homeless or in a mental health crisis, came into the local #Starbucks asking for a cup of ice water and to use the restroom. She was denied by the staff—even after local teens tried to offer money on her behalf. Their excuse? “Corporate policy.”
Funny how that “policy” was enforced when it’s a Black woman that they deemed undesirable asking for help, but not when it’s someone else…especially as I have witnessed other locations allowing free water and the use of restrooms with no question asked.
It wasn’t until I stepped in that they gave her the water. But why did it take that? Why did it even have to come to that? Compassionate and some empathy maybe from the store staff could have avoided it all together.
Starbucks, your training and policy mean nothing if your staff lack compassion or enforce rules selectively. This was inhumane, discriminatory, and unacceptable.
Do better. Your brand promises inclusion, but what I saw was exclusion—and it’s not the first time. I will definitely be drafting a letter in regards to this horrendous situation.
I let the barista know that the drink was not my order. In response she insisted i ordered that said ill have them make another, she slammed the drive-thru window shut and stormed away. I briefly honked to get someone’s attention so the incorrect drink wouldn’t need to be remade. A different employee came to the window with another tea, at which point I explained the situation and asked him to check the last order. He confirmed my original order on the screen and found my correct drink already made on the counter.
While I understand everyone can have a bad day as i was told she had been having by the second employee that was very kind and helpful the initial reaction was unprofessional and uncomfortable. I truly believe this behavior should be addressed, as it does not reflect the level of customer service I’ve consistently experienced in the past.
