At the drive-thru, the woman taking orders (Caucasian, wearing two pigtails) responded with an attitude and said, “You have to make a purchase,” without any explanation or courtesy. No context, no offer to charge for the water, nothing.
I went inside for clarification, and the employee inside kindly explained that the policy recently changed and that customers now have to make a purchase to receive water. That explanation was perfectly reasonable — and it’s exactly what should have been communicated at the drive-thru.
While I was talking to the helpful employee inside, the drive-thru employee came over and repeated the same phrase, “You have to make a purchase,” in a very antagonizing tone, as if she was trying to escalate the situation even further. It was completely unnecessary and unprofessional.
What bothered me most is that you never know why someone urgently needs water — I could’ve been lightheaded, close to passing out, or needing water for my baby’s formula. On a day when I simply needed water, I was met with hostility from a store I regularly spend money with.
Because of this experience, I will not be visiting this particular Starbucks again, and I would not encourage others to either. Policy changes are understandable — disrespect is not.
