I completely understand that times have changed and Starbucks can’t operate as the “third place” it once aspired to be. I also understand needing to limit bathroom access to paying customers. But this recent experience left me disappointed.
I walked into this location planning to use the bathroom first, then order. As I headed toward the restroom, an employee stopped me with, “Can I help you?” I politely said no, assuming it was just a friendly greeting. As I walked away, she called after me asking if I had a mobile order. When I said no, she told me I couldn’t use the restroom unless I ordered first. I explained I was planning to order right after.
The interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive and accusatory, and it made me uncomfortable. After I came out of the restroom, it seemed like the employee was watching me and appeared tense until I got in line to place my order—at which point she seemed to relax and was much more friendly and helpful.
As someone who often places mobile orders and uses the restroom while waiting, this experience has me questioning whether I’ll feel welcome doing so in the future. I completely respect the need for policies, but there must be a better way to enforce them without making loyal customers feel alienated or scrutinized.
I’m sharing this because I truly love Starbucks and want it to remain a place where regulars feel at ease, not on edge.
The staff goes out of their way to make sure you feel welcome. The Starbucks location goes above and beyond.
