Had the most wonderful dinner at Star Leaf in Old Town Orange! The whole restaurant has such a warm, elevated Asian-fusion feel, and every dish we tried was amazing. The truffle noodles were rich and silky, the yellow chicken curry full of flavor, and those garlicky green beans were so good I couldn’t stop eating them. The shrimp ceviche was light and refreshing, and the fried rice topped with fish roe was next-level. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully made. I’m already planning to come back with my family to enjoy it all again!

I originally thought this was a restaurant, but it turned out to be more like a teahouse. The space is not suitable for afternoon tea, as it has an open kitchen with Asian-style high-heat cooking, resulting in constant noise and strong cooking odors.

When I arrived, a large group of women were taking photos and drinking tea at the entrance, which caused me to wait more than ten minutes before entering. During that time, desserts were being prepared right at the entrance. I noticed flies repeatedly landing on multiple desserts. I informed the staff about this issue, but neither of the two staff members appeared concerned. They did not attempt to remove the flies and simply continued preparing the desserts after briefly looking at them.

I was honestly shocked. This demonstrates an extremely low level of professionalism and a lack of basic food safety awareness. Would your staff be willing to eat food that flies have landed on? For this reason, I decided not to order any desserts.

The order of dishes was also chaotic. The main course was served first, while the salad and soup arrived last, more than 30 minutes after the main dish had already been served.

What upset me the most was the seafood. Mussels were served with barnacles still attached, which strongly suggests poor hygiene standards in a restaurant setting. After finishing the meal, I later experienced stomach pain.

At the time, I did not know what the attached organisms were. After returning home and researching, I learned that mussels should have all barnacles and attached organisms completely removed before cooking. Serving mussels with barnacles still attached indicates careless preparation or poor hygiene management, and this is not acceptable by U.S. food service standards.

Given these issues, I believe this experience falls far below acceptable standards. I respectfully request a formal apology

The Thai food was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend the fish roe rice. The chef here was previously a Michelin-starred chef—truly amazing! He’s the inspiration for the movie “God of Cookery.” I also highly recommend the Pad Thai; it’s sweet, sour, and a little spicy. The beef short ribs were even better than what I’ve had at restaurants that cost over $200 per person—incredibly tender. The meal for three people cost just over $100, which was a great deal.

After seeing a post about this place on instagram, it was on my list of places I wanted to visit one day and finally got a chance. You have to make a reservation for tea service which is only available on Thursday-Sunday between 10am-4pm and there’s a $25 cancellation fee per person which was extremely stressful. I made a morning reservation and after having extreme difficulty finding parking, we finally arrived to a completely empty restaurant. You are first recommended to taste test all the tea selections available at the entrance, then you can each select one tea of your choice. Then your food arrives soon after. There’s 9 items person, and it’s $45 per person with personal tea pot and food. The tea and food tasted great but I thought it was worth about $29.99 honestly. After finishing, over 1 hour later, the place was still shockingly empty. I can’t imagine how they can stay in business. Something I really didn’t like was the restroom. Considering tea service is mostly attended by women, I didn’t like that they chose the male restroom with a urinal for guests and the women one was for “employees only”. No woman wants to use a restroom with a urinal. Hope they can change that. I think if they want a successful business, they need to reconsider the price, have more menu options, and I also suggest a small bakery area for take out options to generate more revenue.

Tea Modern Chinese in Orange delivers a fresh take on Cantonese cuisine, balancing tradition with contemporary flair. Our meal featured a mix of bold flavors, delicate textures, and eye-catching presentation. And the interior is SO STUNNING!

Everything we ordered was so carefully prepared and served. The execution was solid across the board, and the thoughtful plating added to the experience. Plus, the service was superb! Such thoughtfulness and the timing for when all the dishes came out felt nicely planned. Would definitely return to explore more of the menu!

What we ordered:
Steak on Crack
Honey Walnut Shrimp
Hong Kong Steamed Fish
Crispy Bird’s Nest Noodles
Hojicha Tiramisu

I did the $45 afternoon tea set which came with a tray of savory foods, sweet foods and one pot of tea per person (with refills). I enjoyed the food and the desserts weren’t too sweet!
I wish they had more tea varieties to complement the meal like a toasty genmaicha.

When I went with my family and their friends I was excited to see if it was good but it wasn’t as great because the food was okay but of course the tea was better. My favorite savories food there was Egg Salad Sando, Cucumber Sandwich but I took off the cucumbers because I don’t like them lol. For the Sweets my favorites were Black Sesame Hazelnut Choux and Raspberry Lychee mouse ❤️.The rest of the savory and sweet food didn’t taste that great unfortunately in my opinion. Besides the food, the service was great no complaints about that. Oh another thing that I found of was the restroom sign I feel as though it should be regular one anyway the interior design was okay but I felt it was that modern it felt more old style in my opinion. Anyway I’m not sure if I would come here again just because the food was okay but I’m not sure if it’s worth going there because it is $45 dollars per person lol. Anyway it seemed appealing just the food didn’t live up to my expectations.

We went here on a Saturday. Got a reservation 2 days ahead. Dessert were pretty delicious and not too sweet. They have 8 different kinds of small bites. 4 savory and 4 sweet. I love all of them!

You also get a pot of tea per desert set. And they have samples of tea in the shop for you to try before ordering. They have both caffeinated and non caffeinated tea.

In May 2025, a set of dessert with tea costs $45/person. They also have options to upgrade to mimosas.

This is a really new restaurant that’s just been opened for less than a month when I visited. The food plating here is really pretty. It felt like fine dining in an affordable price. The steak was really tender, no matter which cut I had. I didn’t expect this tenderness for this price. The steaks are totally what I would order again. Other dishes are Asian fusion, they’re very delicious too. It was a really nice dining experience and I would totally recommend for special occasions.

I’m so happy that they opened a Star Leaf closer to me! I really enjoyed the food at their Pasadena location and you can expect the same level of quality here. The golden curry is my favorite and I recommend getting it with soft shell crab. The short ribs are a must try as well. If you’re into afternoon tea, this was previously Tea Modern Chinese and I’m so glad they still offer a great tea service here! You get to sample the variety of teas before you make a selection which is a nice experience. The ambience is still very cute and this would be an ideal venue for special & intimate celebrations. I feel like not a lot of places offer both high tea and options to order hot food so it’s special that they do both. The service is also very friendly here. Can’t wait to come back and try more things on their menu!
