History of the Stampmill: A Black Hills Legacy. The Stampmill Inn, Restaurant, and Saloon in Lead, South Dakota, is located in a building that has stood since 1897, originally constructed as a boarding house for miners and travelers. Built as part of the Halloran Block, this four-story brick structure quickly became a hub in Lead’s bustling community, providing lodging to those drawn to the area’s thriving gold mines. Today, it maintains its Victorian character while offering modern comforts to guests. Now home to a restaurant, saloon, and two beautifully decorated Victorian suites, the Stampmill captures the spirit of the Black Hills’ early days with a welcoming ambiance that blends history with hospitality.
Long established saloon-style bar/restaurant for typical American cuisine & atmospheric decor.

If you’re in the area, you HAVE to eat here. We travel all over and the meals we had were delicious, well presented, and flavorful. Our server, Jessica, was friendly, attentive, and phenomenal. We will definitely return!

We were greeted by a sweet, friendly lady. The inside is so cool for decor. Clean place. The fish and chips were amazing. My husband had the mole high pastrami and said it was awesome! Our waitress, Jessica, was so sweet, so attentive, kind and a delight!! Make sure you stop here for drinks from their fully stocked bar and enjoy the food too!

Charming old established building in town. We enjoyed the outdoor seating. Our server was very hospitable. The manager seated us with answers to all our questions. Very good impressions made. The menu provided a great variety of options with local area appetizers favorites like chislic and stuffed zucchini flowers. We tried both. They were delicious. Our meals were hot and made fresh. Great chocolate brownie desert. Recommend trying this historical mining town restaurant with great character and even better food.

The reviews were pretty mixed so we decided to give it a chance. The service (from our server) wasn’t good. There was another server who checked in on us TWICE because she was walking by and noticed that our waitress hadn’t checked on us and we clearly needed something. After taking our order and bringing our appetizer, our waitress came out and said they didn’t have one of the items we’d ordered- but it had been 15 mins since we ordered. She ordered something else and then 3 minutes later, the waitress came back out and said “Wait we do have it”. Great. Food comes out and on the menu it specifically said “two 6oz chicken in sauce” so I asked her where the other chicken was. We were told it was butterflied, that the menu is inaccurate, etc. I didn’t take a picture of the plate because it was an awkward encounter.
Long story short, we sent it back and my sister didn’t eat. The waitress ignored us the rest of the time as if she was upset we sent the meal back. She dropped off our check and came back to pick up payment, but I told her I’d paid online using the QR code. I would not return to this place. They didn’t try to make any of it right and instead ignored us and made us feel like we were wrong for pointing out the differences in the product vs menu description. The pork belly mac and cheese was a little too greasy for my liking. The salad, cheese curds, and chicken strips were all good.

Our family truly enjoyed dinner at the historic Stampmill. The 4 story restaurant and saloon is full of historical photos and decor. The owner and staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. We wish we had more room to try the wonderful dessert options (especially Blueberry Cobbler Cheesecake), but the portions are generous. The coffee rub ribeye was fantastic!!!

This is the best dining in the black hills! The owner, wearing period correct attire was a perfect fit for this saloon ! Tremendous food choices and service. For some twist of fate , they had a guitar player and singer combo that was as enjoyable as I can remember. Honestly don’t pass this place up!!!!!!

We had a great experience coming here, our food and drinks were delivered quickly, and the owner was really nice. The atmosphere was great, and the food was also very good. Only full service restaurant in Lead. We would recommend this to anyone looking for an appealing dinner experience in Lead/Deadwood.

The food was good, but my fiancé ordered cheese curds for appetizer and it came out about 45 minutes later. 7-24-25 we got here about 12:00. Appetizer got on the table at 12:45 and got our food at 12:52pm. I heard alot of people tell us to come here and I was hungry cause I’m pregnant. So I’m sure there’s reasons for everything but all would be fine if the appetizer came out sooner. Cause we had to walk a ways to get here cause the parking places are taken quick. But the servers were nice. Also the avocado was old or frozen then thawed. I feel bad for the review but that’s just me I didn’t have a good experience. There weren’t a lot of us at the time cause people were done as we came in. But don’t let my review stop you from eating here. There were four adults and one child in my group.

This place is a hidden gem in Lead. One of the best we’ve tried during our time here (visited twice). Jeanne, one of the owners, is very sweet and Marianna (new server) is a doll. Be patient (they’re under newish management and still working out the kinks) and you’ll be satisfied. Simple mixed drinks were very economically priced and the food was fantastic. Chislic top sirloin app was so tender and delicious, would recommend! Thanks!!
