Those biscuits with pimento cheese, the crab deviled eggs, and steaks – I dream about them.
Went with a friend on a Friday afternoon; we were immediately seated (we did have reservations). The restaurant did get incredibly busy at one point, and our server apologized for it, but to be honest, I never felt neglected. I also saw that everyone worked as a team to help one another.
We started with the Buttermilk Biscuits and Pimento Cheese, Blue Crab Deviled Eggs, and the Beet & Ricotta salad. All of these were incredibly tasty; I had to be careful not to finish them all so I could save room for the steak.
For our steaks, we ordered the Butcher Steak (hangar steak) and Ribeye. Both were amazing and cooked perfectly. I enjoyed the hangar steak the most.
For dessert, we ordered the Carrot Cake and Chocolate Cake. We shared a bite of each. Both were phenomenal and perfectly balanced.
I highly recommend!
THE MEAL
Biscuits & Pimento: These were amazing. The biscuits have a crisp, crunchy crust protecting a decadent, soft crumb. The pimento cheese adds great creaminess, but, the side of salted Vermont butter elevated them even further.
The Steaks:
• Butcher’s Cut (Hanger Steak): Served medium rare with an excellent sear. Tender, juicy, and full of flavor.
• New York Strip: Robust beef flavor with perfectly seared fat.
• Lamb Leg: Cooked nicely to medium rare, though the pickled pepper relish was a bit overpowering. Tip: We used the onion cream sauce from the Baby Carrots dish to balance the relish.
SIDES & SWEETS
• Savory: The Baby Carrots (on that tasty onion cream) and the Thick-Cut Grilled Bacon were standouts. The bacon had a nice richness without being too heavy.
• Sweet: Do not skip dessert. The Carrot Cake was incredibly moist, and the Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream was a memorable finish.
SERVICE
⭐ Special thanks to Abi for the warm, professional service. She understood the food and wine menu inside and out.
OVERALL
A great place for a business dinner or special date night. St. Anselm shares high-quality food and service at a reasonable price.
Every single dish impressed me.
I started with the Baby Iceberg salad, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s the best wedge salad I’ve ever had. Instead of that traditional massive wedge that crumbles the second you try to cut it, this one is actually constructed in a way that’s easy to eat. It’s generous enough to split, but I’m glad I didn’t. I finished the whole thing without regret. 🙂
They’re known for the buttermilk biscuits with pimento cheese spread (pictured), and now I understand why. If they decided to serve only those and nothing else, I’d still come back. They’re that good.
As for the NY Strip, I hate to keep saying “best I’ve ever had,” but here we are. It was cooked perfectly, exactly as ordered, and the au poivre sauce added this creamy, peppery depth that elevated the steak without overpowering it. Just outstanding.
We shared the ice cream cake for dessert, and I’m glad we did. It’s big, and by that point I had already cleaned every plate put in front of me. Worth it.
The place was at full capacity on a Thursday night, but you wouldn’t have known it from the service. And I really do mean team. Our waiter was clearly busy, yet drinks were refilled, plates appeared and disappeared, and everything moved seamlessly. It felt coordinated, not chaotic.
One thing that really stood out was the acoustics. The dining room was completely full, but I had no trouble hearing my guest or the staff. It never felt loud or overwhelming. Someone clearly put thought into the design because it struck that rare balance of lively-fun without being noisy.
This is officially my go-to for steak in DC. I know they serve other proteins, but after that strip, I may never branch out.
We started off with the biscuits which was, unfortunately, the best item I had that evening. I had ordered by far one of the worst steaks I’ve had in DC area, the butchers steak, accompanied by a side of broccoli. I’ve had more flavor out of a Golden Corral steak than the steak here. Maybe they left out the garlic butter in the steak I ordered? It was seared a bit too long which made it rather an unpleasant eating experience overall. Just tasteless and charred despite its appearance. The side of broccoli had a similar experience. The charred edges made the broccoli difficult to enjoy.
Overall, big let down but I’d try it again one day as some menu item names were appealing to me. Rather pricey for what I experienced. No intentions of going back at the moment.
Sidenote: The chicken pictured was of the person I was with meal. He found it to be just “ok”.
Had an incredible date night at St. Anselm last Friday. The rustic ambiance was beautiful and romantic, perfect for the occasion.
Our server Denali was fantastic—great recommendations and such a positive attitude that really enhanced our experience. The drinks were delicious, and the duck pot pie was to die for. OMG, seriously amazing!
For dessert, we got creative and ordered two of their biscuits to make our own creation with chocolate syrup, honey, and ice cream. The biscuits are perfection—soft, buttery, and flaky.
Everything from the atmosphere to the service to the food was outstanding. Highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back!
