A Tale of Two Visits

Thank you to the owner of Square Peg in Vernon. I felt if I took the time to criticize my first experience, it was only fair ,and also important, to show gratitude when things are done right.

To OWNERSHIP,

Thank you for responding to us so quickly when our first experience didn’t go as planned. Your willingness to make things right, brought us back for another try, and the food this time DID NOT DISAPPOINT!

We love a good Chicken Parm sandwich, and this was how you do it right. Excellent chicken, perfectly fried with ample amounts of cheese and terrific red sauce. We enjoyed every bite. We also had the fried mozzarella and these aren’t your run of the mill sticks. Nice large rectangles of fried mozzarella just begging to be dipped in red sauce and devoured.

Although the food was good, I appreciate even more the care to make things right. We believe in staying local for our dining choices and it’s nice to know this option stays on the table.

Thank you again!

I went there with my daughter who raved about the establishment. Who most likely would give five stars across the board. We started with the loaded calamari. The calamari was very crispy and came with sliced cherry peppers and blue cheese bits. I enjoyed the calamari as found not be chewy and breading a had good flavor. We settled on three personal pizzas unfortunately I forgot what the name of the order was called. It consisted of three thin crusted wood fired pizzas. Our choices were a Marguerita pie, the Figgy piggy which has prosciutto, fig compote (whatever that is) fontana cheese, garlic, Parmigian cheese &lemon vinaigrette arugula (I enjoyed) and also the Oh honey pie. Which consisted of prosciutto, honey, fontana cheese, figs, gorgonzola & Parmigian cheese. I really enjoyed and recommend the Oh Honey. I enjoyed the sweetness of the honey mixed in with the other flavors on the pie. The price for this trio was reasonable at approx 35 dollars and was more than enough to feed three excited football fans. There were several pies to choose from to create the trio. So everyone can have their preferred pizza. Being from the New Haven Connecticut area (Pizza Capitol of the world) I was very happy with this pizzeria.

Best pizza around by FAR. Awesome service. Cool ambiance
But what makes it is the drive thru pick up window.

Everything about the restaurant, management, staff, and menu is exceptional. And the round pies are AMAZING, but the Detroit style pies often come out with a lot of raw dough in the center/undercooked. Pizza is hard and they’re doing amazing things, better than most other places in Connecticut.

This restaurant (Vernon location) is also new, so I’m sure they’ll get the Detroit pies dialed in soon. But as it sits, (went back twice about a month apart) they’re still coming out undercooked in the center due to the oven temps being too high and maybe the hearth being too cool.

That said, the round pies are incredible. They were also a bit underdone and floppy when they first opened, mostly due to too many wet ingredients not being pre-cooked before putting on the pie for it’s final firing, so they leaked a lot onto an otherwise well cooked crust. But they’re now much better, some of the nice Neapolitan style pies around! They’re toppings are delicious, really well balanced for the dough, and interesting.

I hope this review doesn’t sound too harsh cus I will definitely be back. They’re just above and beyond most other pizza places in the area and I want them to be perfect

My bf and I wanted to try the new pizza flight and mushroom arancini, and they did not disappoint! You get 3 pizzas for only $35, and get to choose one specialty white sauce, one specialty red sauce, and a choice between a cheese, pepperoni or margherita. We went with smashed potato, The Jackpot, and Margherita. They were all delicious, but the marg was our favorite because you just can’t go wrong with fresh basil on a pizza! The arancini were nice and crispy and came with this delicious, creamy red sauce to dip them in. We also got the house salad that has roasted tomatoes that were so good, and we loved the red wine dressing! Although, there wasn’t a lot of beer options for a flight, so we went with a single pour of Yuengling and Sam Adam’s summer ale. There were also a couple of loud drunk people at the bar, which affected the overall atmosphere, but we really enjoyed the food and service!

Cute little chain with pretty good quality food. For a chain this restaurant is a nice step up with good food. Went here for trivia which was a lot of fun- modern questions and not too loud. We enjoyed some appetizers such as mozz sticks and had pizza. Overall really enjoyed and recommend

I’m not sure what’s going on with this place lately. It’s really hit or miss. Sometimes the pizza is great, and other times it’s burned. The crust is so thin that by the time I get home—literally a 2-minute drive—it’s already cold, which makes no sense.

My biggest issue is the inconsistency, especially with how often the pizzas are burned. It honestly feels like whoever is making them is overcooking them and just putting them in the box before the manager notices. I actually brought a pizza back once, and the manager was extremely friendly. He gave me a gift card for the full amount and a free pizza, and you could see how disappointed he was when he saw how it came out. So the management is great—no complaints there.

But again, this time I ordered a small pizza and it was still way overdone, with the crust burned. It’s disappointing. And yes, I know someone might say, “Please call us for a refund,” but that doesn’t really fix the underlying issue.

Another thing: I love the drive-up window, but they took away the bell, so you can’t let anyone know you’re there. When I went inside to pick up my order, I saw one person on a laptop (I think the hostess?) and one person working the bar. Not sure what’s going on, but if I were the owner of this Square Peg location, I’d definitely look into it. Maybe place a few online orders on different days and see what kind of pizza you actually receive.

Vernon doesn’t want burned pizza—please fix this.

Square Peg, or “Squeg” has the best happy hour and weekend specials around. Their pizzas are artfully made with a variety of toppings- I really enjoy the figgy piggy, prince of paramus. I’m not sure if they still offer the fried spaghetti strands as a starter, but when they have, they are surprisingly addicting. The only negative I’ve had was really slow service during a not very crowded brunch- it took around 30 mins to get my pizza while my table mate got their food fairly quickly, so it lead to them eating and me awkwardly waiting, and the server didn’t check in with us at outside of a curt “your pizza is coming” after about 20 mins of waiting and a more curt “sorry” when they dropped it off. But that was a one off and the other times I’ve been service has been fast, friendly, and attentive.

Man. I had high hopes considering the glaze this place got from my brother and cousin. But we just got it in the car and took a slice immediately. Idk how the hell it was Luke warm? And soggy? The chewiest pizza I’ve had. Expected a nice crispy bottom and hot considering we ate a slice in the parking lot.. will stick with my go to spot.
