The restaurant looks clean and it is really nice. I think I may have ordered wrong because my sandwich was dry dry. It is a family run business and they seem very nice. I will go back and try something else. Mac n cheese was a big hit with my teenager.

I was visiting my husband’s nephew in Doswell, VA for a baseball game and stumbled upon Square Fire BBQ. Found this place in a small shopping center and didn’t know what to expect. I ordered the half rack of ribs and they were so flavorful and juicy. My husband ordered the brisket and he absolutely loved that as well. If you are in the area and are in the mood for Barbecue I recommend stopping by!

Excellent meal had after I ended up in Ladysmith by accident. First thing I noticed was very modest prices for BBQ. This place was definitely not trying to break the bank. Which could have been a bad thing. Was worried for a moment I would end up with gas station BBQ of questionable providence.
Happy to report this was not case! I ordered my BBQ “go to” of brisket, coleslaw and french fries. The coleslaw was creamy and fresh, the fries crisp and delicious and the brisket had the proper char with the fat all but rendered to that mush you want. It had lost some internal color, but thats a pass because i ordered it 30 minutes before the store closed. It melted in the mouth, and was not chewy at all. The real star though was the bun that came with the platter. It was lightly toasted, buttery and delicious. Not a throw away piece of Wonderbread. The brisket, coleslaw and some of their BBQ sauce made an excellent sandwich. As I was eating several people came in and out, so it’s clearly a popular hole in the wall with the locals.
My only concern was that the place seemed to be having some maintenance issues. The soda machine seemed to be inoperable, there was a visible ceiling leak and the canned drinks on offer were sitting in melted ice water instead of ice itself. I also wished there was a spicy option. I don’t mind sweet BBQ sauce, but I personally prefer mine with a little zip. None of this detracted from the food at all, but was slightly off putting.
All in all, 4 stars to a very nice little restaurant. If they get the drink situation sorted out, maybe set out a bottle of Tabasco, and fix that leak, easily a 5 star recommendation.

First time coming in. Wife and I decided to split the BBQ sampler platter.. As you can see there was more than enough to share. Sweet based sauce but not too sweet. The pork bbq is juicy with a “neutral” flavor for lack of a better term. It goes well with the sweet or vinegar sauce on hand. The ribs are also good. They have a nice cooked on glaze and are cooked “al dente” vice “fall off the bone” which is really the way ribs should be cooked. The smoked sausage was also really good. Cornbread is sweet and moist. Beans may have a little extra seasoning but they are what they are which isn’t bad. The only minor complaint was one of the ribs was more bone than meat, but the overall quantity of food balances that minor issue out. The crew is polite and checks on you while you’re eating and makes sure you don’t need anything else. Overall, this has been a great experience and we’ll be back.

First time visiting tonight and I got the macaroni and 6 wings (not whole wings – drumsticks and flats). The macaroni was okay… but, I was pleasantly surprised by the wings themselves. I got the Mango Habanero sauce and while it wasn’t fully cooked on to the wings, there was enough for me to ‘dip’ into in my foil inside my box. The wings had a noticeable smoked flavor which added to it. I think this restaurant is a great addition to Ladysmith since other food options out here are very limited and something you really just settle for.

I was really surprised with this place.
I don’t normally see a lot of people there so my expectations weren’t really high.
The corn bread is like my mother made it. It’s moist and like a cake, it was so good. The coleslaw was really good, but the ribs were lean, tender and the barbeque sauce is so good they could bottle it. I don’t understand why I never see people in there. I thought the cost was good, not excessive.
The staff was kind, friendly.
I liked it a lot. They deserve more notoriety, more business. I’d like to see them do well. It’s definitely a place I want to go back to. Wish I had gone sooner.

This was my 2nd visit here.First time I went it was really good. Second time I got stuck in that part of nowhere I was excited to be able to get a good meal.i even raved to my friend about how good it was. Unfortunately it wasn’t good. My pulled chicken was really dry. The Mac n cheese had a weird after taste. Her meal wasn’t any better. We both ate less then half. Guess it depends on who’s cooking. Needless to say I won’t ever find out. I don’t like spending money on food that goes in the trash.

I got the brisket combo with 2 sides of Mac and cheese. Staff were very nice. Brisket cook and flavor was ok but the portion was terrible. The small plastic container actually weighed more than the 4 thin slices of brisket it held. The Mac and cheese was overcooked to the point that the pasta was mushy and fell apart. For almost $15 I really expected better.

If you haven’t tried this place you are truly missing out. The ribs are the best I have EVER had. The Mac and cheese is super cheesy and creamy. The baked beans have just the right amount of sweetness. The corn bread is soft and delicious. You get a great quality and amount of food for a great price. Cannot say enough great things about this place. Truly Ladysmith’s hidden gem
