The Spice of India | Authentic Indian Food Restaurant
Reviews
Our waiter was extremely attentive (we were the only people in the restaurant at 5pm on a Monday evening), and even offered us a dessert and a cranberry juice on the house.
The menu is rather limited, which is to be expected in a smaller town. The entrees are what I’d consider the most “basic” fare when it comes to Indian food: butter chicken and tikka masala. I was surprised to see some non-traditional items on the menu, like chicken wings and spring rolls.
Can I call what this restaurant offers as atmosphere, “atmosphere”? Other than the name of the establishment, I would never have guessed I was inside an Indian restaurant. The wall art has no connections to India, there is no music playing, and the color palette is black and white. At one point, the waiter turned on the restaurant’s tv to reruns of “Everybody Loves Raymond.” Admittedly, we did enjoy the available coloring pages.
The food didn’t leave me impressed. The naan was floppy, the chicken was white meat and rather dry, the curry was thin rather than creamy. My favorite item was the mango lassi, which was everything a lassi should be.
I recommend this place as an overall whimsical experience. The only Indian restaurant in the small town of Fillmore, with a very attentive staff and extremely quirky vibe—it has a certain charm.
But if you’re looking for food that’s worth $20-30 per person, I sadly think this misses the mark.
First strike was the delay. They said it would take 10-15 minutes but it took 45 minutes.
Second, I’ve had Chicken Tikka Masala multiple times in other restaurants, this was not anywhere close to it. The chicken was tough and tasted off, the masala was bland and tasted more like tomato soup. I requested medium heat and it came out with zero heat.
Third, I ordered naan and it was hard and tasted like it was reheated.
I’m not one to give bad review but I was very disappointed with this food.
Fourth, price for the food was outrageous.
Although it was a take out, I ate it almost immediately after leaving the restaurant. The masala was even too hot to eat right away.
I would not recommend this restaurant.
