We started with the asparagus and mushroom tart, which was light, flaky, and perfectly savory — the kind of appetizer that sets the tone immediately and tells you the kitchen knows what it’s doing. Earthy, rich, but not heavy.
The pulled pork poutine was spot on: tender pork, generous toppings, and bold flavor without being sloppy. Exactly what you want when you order poutine, but done with intention rather than excess.
And the bison burger? Outstanding. Juicy, flavorful, and perfectly balanced on a soft bun — hearty without feeling greasy, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients.
They make a great bread pudding in a generous size and then we also got an apple dumpling which could use a little more filling. But the crust is flaky and good on its own.
This is the kind of place you bring people when you want to impress without being pretentious — great for date night, visitors from out of town, or just treating yourself to a memorable meal.
I had the Hillsburger with Arugula salad, friend had the duck club with the chicken pablano soup, and we started with the Southerner’s poutine.
The pountine was pretty good, the jalapenos and juices from them are what made it. For the price of this app, would have expected more “wow” with the penetration and more pop to the pimento.
The burger was mediocre, zero seasoning on the beef. The tomato was flavorless. The worst part is they plated the salad and burger together, so my bottom bun was literally like a soggy napkin in the short amount of time in bringing the food to the table.
The duck was also lacking some flavor, as was the tomato as well. But the chicken pablano soup was so tasty and flavorful, it was thought it may have overridden flavors from the duck.
The biggest disappointment between us both was with the tea, its fountain tea (syrup). Downtown vibes, super cool setting and venue, and you have syrup tea. Gross.
For $50 with tip for 1 app, 1 tea, and 1 burger, I am pretty disappointed. The Colonial Inn itself is great to see in its restored condition, the work done on the building looks fantastic.
I’ll add our service was great, very personable waiter who checked on our table appropriately and took care of us.
