Passed thru Barstow going thru our Route 66 adventure, and was looking for dinner unique to the area. Southern Twist had good reviews, and an A Rating so we decided to give it a try. I ordered the oxtail for my main with mac-n-cheese and the collard greens. My boyfriend order the dino rib with butter beams and black-eyed peas. DELISH! We’re so glad we stopped in. It hit the spot esp during this long road trip we are on. The oxtail with gravy was flavorful and cooked well, the dino beef rib was tender and filling. Out of the sides we rated them with the butter beans being the best, followed by the black-eyed peas, collard greens and then mac-n-cheese. In terms of service, the gal was very thorough with explaining how to order, pricing, and was very welcoming.

The lady who served me was exceptionally nice. She even agreed with my grandpa humor.
The ribs, pork, were good. Not great, but good. They were very tender and cooked throughout, however they did not have a lot of flavor. You know, the kind of flavor you expect in Southern cooking.
The Mac & Cheese was very good. Traditional south.
The Butter Beans stole the show. I have never, in my 58 years of life, had Butter Beans like them. I am going to try to get the recipe.

Found via the Google reviews. First meal after a week in Johnson Valley. Generous portions, very friendly service, and – wait for it – dog friendly. We had meatloaf, ox tail, collard greens, sweet potatoes, green beans, mac and cheese and sweet tea and it was all legit. I’ll come back next year on my way home from King of the Hammers!

We randomly came across this restaurant and loved the excellent food. The beef ribs were so tender and delicious, as well as the sauce to accompany them. The bbq chicken was equally as tasty. The sides were varied with lots of unique flavors. Would highly recommend!

I am a truck driver that could not make it home for Thanksgiving but I found this spot and let me tell you the service was awesome and amazing. The atmosphere was very relaxing and the turkey wings, yams, dressing and peach cobbler were off the chain. I will be making this my go to spot when I am in the Barstow area. I would like to mention also that they fed people that were less fortunate no one went hungry today.

I travel all over the U.S. for work and was super excited when I found a restaurant that served true southern food in California. I ate way too much because I couldn’t choose between just two sides! It has been so long since I had a true home cooked mac and cheese that a restaurant made from scratch. No processed cheese sauce! The meat was tender and melted in my mouth. If you want a place that has great southern home cooked food, doesn’t fill your food with preservatives and chemicals or just heat up frozen food and serve it, this is it. The staff were amazing and the owner came out personally to check on her tables! She had an amazing personality! I absolutely loved her dedication to her business. The place was extremely clean and the booths were amazingly comfortable. Hopefully I get this way again really soon. Definitely stopping everyone I come through.

I love this place! We often stop to charge our Tesla across the street and stop in to grab some food and drink. Authentic Southern style food, the catfish is amazing!! Everything is scratch made including the real sweet tea and lemonade. The owner is very sweet and the staff are so friendly. Make sure you ask to try the Ka’biscuit for dessert, try to guess the main ingredient, it’ll surprise you.

This is a fantastic soul food restaurant. The collard greens are perfection, the lima beans are a must-have, the fried okra is crispy and delicious, and the fried catfish is as good as it gets. My wife had the beef ribs, and they were fantastically smoked and fell off the bone. Everything we had was seasoned and lip smacking great. I can’t wait to come back. If you have taste buds, you must treat them by trying this hidden gem. The service is amazing and accommodating. Thank you, Shawn. And Mr. Hen is warm and inviting. Thank you, Mr. Hen.

I am personally familiar with southern and soul food having been raised southern. This IS GREAT southern home cooking!! Admittedly, not all options are available every day, but I can guarantee you will find something delicious regardless of what day you visit! I was told by the very personable server Shawn, that Sunday’s are their busiest day, so do what you will with that information. We came in on a Saturday night around 6 and it was not very busy. I had the incredibly tender and perfectly smoky beef ribs, greens you can taste the generations of experience in, and candied yams that melted in my mouth. Hubby had fried catfish, life changing lima beans (seriously! I must learn how to make these now) and wonderfully crispy fried okra. Its been too long since I’ve had this level of country cooking and I am SO happy we took a chance. Thank you to the owner Mr. Hen, his lovely wife and our server Shawn (and anyone else in the kitchen I may not have met) for a perfect down home experience. Do yourself a favor and try this little slice of heaven, you’ll return just like we plan to!
