I recently visited Southern Spice on Newark Avenue and had a pleasant overall dining experience.
The restaurant offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a clean, well-maintained space that reflects its authentic South Indian roots. The staff were courteous, attentive, and ensured that we were comfortable throughout our visit, which added a professional and welcoming touch to the experience.
The menu features a wide variety of traditional dishes, and you can tell there is a genuine effort to preserve authentic flavors. While most aspects of the experience were enjoyable, the biryani, in my personal opinion, did not stand out as much as I had hoped. The preparation and presentation were good, but the depth of flavor and balance of spices were slightly milder than my expectation.
That said, the overall quality, service, and ambiance make Southern Spice a worthwhile place to visit, especially for those looking to explore authentic South Indian cuisine in the Newark Ave area. I appreciate the consistency and hospitality, and I would certainly be open to returning to explore more of their menu.

Today we visited this restaurant expecting a good dining experience, but unfortunately it was disappointing. We ordered biryani’s And curry’s , and it had taste less. We politely requested if it could be changed to another biryani, but the staff member who came to speak with us was quite rude in his response.
He told us that they don’t replace or exchange biryani and said it’s their usual policy, but the way it was communicated felt disrespectful. We understand restaurant policies, but basic courtesy and customer service are equally important.

They have shawarma, which is a middle eastern wrap, but their version is filled with amazing Indian spices and flavors. I loved it. They have an express section which is useful because the main restaurant gets busy. They give a free soft drink or Lays chips with the shawarma. It felt like I was in India. I overheard another customer saying it’s the best food in the area. The staff members were very friendly. I really enjoyed it all.

This is an amazing Southern Indian restaurant. The flavors cascade to deliver an amazing experience
The staff is helpful, patient, and efficient. My food was delivered surprisingly quickly, and I could tell it was made to order.
Just absolutely delicious.
Be prepared for a bit of spice even with the mild spice tier, but it adds to the flavor.
Be prepared for a trip to India right in Jersey City.

Fantastic food! We had the Chicken Dum Biryani, Dilkush Chicken Biryani, and Karivepaku Chicken (appetizer), and every single dish was flavorful. Highly recommended to anyone looking for great biryani in New Jersey.

Best restaurant biryani I’ve had thus far (though I have yet to try a few more spots in the area). Flavors were immaculate and everything was very well seasoned and cooked. The paneer was on the oily side and the biryani had too much rice-to-protein in my opinion, especially for the price, but only minor complaints.
I will certainly be coming back.

I’ve been there with friends and had a few starters among which chicken 65. Goat ghee roast and Appolo fish was exceptional.
