We have 3 locations – Hartselle, Cullman and Arab, Alabama. We are a drive thru only restaurant. We specialize in Hickory Smoked Pork, Turkey, Chicken and Ribs. We also have Turkey Stew October 1st thru April 15th. We have been in business for over 48 yrs. We pride ourselves on having great food and friendly service. Our Hartselle store is the only one open on Sunday- 10am till 2pm. Cullman and Arab are CLOSED on Sunday.

Everything was good except for one item. I had also ordered a whole chocolate pie. When I opened the box at home, it didn’t look like the chocolate pies that I have ordered in the past. It didn’t have the topping on it and it looked like a browny. It was chocolate but not what I was expecting. It looked baked. I didn’t call them to see if they had changed their recipe or added this type of pie to the selection. The other food purchased was great.

Every time I’m in town, I go out of my way to eat here. This time the turkey had so much hardened skin on it, half the meat of my sandwich was missing once I took it apart and pulled the skin off. The taste is also different. It is no longer pulled turkey. I won’t go out my way to get it again.

I visited here last Monday for lunch while working in the Hartselle area. I had planned to eat inside but when I got there I realized it was much more of a drive through vibe so I went through the line and then drove to a nearby large lot and ate in my car. I’m honestly not sure if there’s any indoor dining or not, but it worked out fine for me.
They were reasonably busy at around 1 PM – maybe 3 cars ahead of me. I got through quickly enough and was able to place my order probably in less than 10 minutes. The menu isn’t super easily viewable from the line so know what you want beforehand! The lady at the window was pleasant enough.
I ordered a pulled pork potato and a large (they mean it when they say large!) sweet tea. I thought the price was VERY reasonable – I got out for only around $12 for a plenty large lunch.
As far as bbq taters go, this isn’t the monstrously large kind you’ll find at Lawlers or the nearby Pigskin BBQ, but it is certainly big enough for a filling meal. The potato was cooked nicely. I was pretty happy with the pork, too — good consistency/pull, and I could actually taste the smoke! My one complaint is that the sour cream and whipped butter spread (not real butter) came on the side. I very much prefer restaurants to apply those ingredients themselves so they can melt into the potato beneath the hot meat and cheese. Also, real butter would’ve been my preference, lol.
Overall though, very solid potato and bbq for a very reasonable price. I would certainly return for a tasty local lunch.

The last three times we have gotten BBQ from Southern Hickory our order has either been wrong or missing something. How difficult is it to get the sauces correct?
We always get the same thing. For the sauces, I always request no thin red, rib sauce instead, and two white sauces.
Today, there was thin red, two tiny single serving white sauces, and no rib sauce.
Last time, no white at all, just one rib sauce.
I have even asked before if there is rib and two whites before leaving the window. They always assure me that there is.
I shouldn’t have to sit at the window and unpack my order to make sure it is correct. After three failed attempts at getting it right, I’ll check it each time from now on before driving away.

The food was good. Getting people to understand the difference in barbecue sauce and just something with some vinegar and spices in it is another. Also when you send somebody out to take orders at the car the least they could do is smile. And not act like they really hate to be there. I won’t be back at this one. I’ll stick to mine at Cullman. The picture at the bottom is what y’all call barbecue sauce. It tasted like pure vinegar with a little pork grease added to it and some spices. Thank God I ordered a pint of white sauce.

Absolutely the worst BBQ I think I have ever purchased. The ribs were overcooked extremely dry almost would say charcoal. The pulled pork portion was inadequate for the number of sandwiches. Compared to competition up the road everything was an additional charge family pack without beans potato salad extra. Two tablespoons of sauce for ribs and pulled pork, needed a gallon as dry as it was. Wasn’t possible to give a negative start. If it had been dine in and this had come to the table I would have demanded a refund, only reason I didn’t take it back today was I was ten miles away. DONT WAST YOUR MONEY EAT SOMEWHERE ELSE. I WILL NOT BE BACK..

Ordered two potatoes with NO CHIVES, got them home and they are both loaded with chives. I have a severe onion allergy so they are not edible. They even repeated back to me NO CHIVES? So I’m sure they understood my order. Apparently they can’t get employees who can follow simple instructions. If it allowed me to post a picture I would.
