We’ve ordered the Monte Cristo, Fried Oyster Small Plate, Seafood Nachos, and The Debris
What we love:
1. Southern Grocery is on my short list for out-of-town guests. The menu is reminiscent of what you might find in a larger city – loads of options but with quirky names and a southern signature. It has a large footprint for larger parties and an eclectic, contemporary design.
2. A server who gives you just the right amount of attention is hard to find. Drezdon has a rare urgency and efficiency, with the ability to listen, take orders, answer questions about the menu and make recommendations.
Minor Criticisms:
1. I ordered the seafood nachos for the second time. I like my food almost too hot to eat, and while it was tasty, it could’ve been served much hotter for my liking.
Overall, Southern Grocery is a win on the list of places to dine in the Shoals. I’ll be back soon, and bring guests!
My girlfriend and I went out for date night at Southern Grocery on a night in September. We were greeted promptly by our server, Ben, who welcomed us warmly and offered suggestions for an appetizer. After ordering drinks we landed on the Southern Trash Board, which is the Southern/Zydeco riff on a charcuterie board. A few minutes later, Ben delivered a board with: pimento cheese, three Devine Deviled Eggs, whipped feta cheese, smoked sausage, pickles, naan bread (I think), pork-rinds, and a sriracha honey chutney. The combinations were fantastic, and every bite satisfying. A short time later out came Ben with our entree’s. We opted for the Zydeco Shrimp with corn maque choux, crawfish stuffing, and southern style turnip greens. Ben asked if I wanted pepper sauce to go with my greens. After tasting them I declined! They were flavorful to the point of being competitive with Husk’s greens out of Nashville. I was quite impressed with the maque choux. The blackened shrimp was also quite tasty. My girlfriend opted for the Pork Tenderloin skewers, wrapped in bacon and brushed with the honey sriracha glaze. Sides were: cheese grits, and the lobster Mac and cheese. The lobster Mac and cheese was definitely worth the $6 upgrade because it had lobster in every bite. And the tenderloin was also savory, juicy, and cooked to perfection. I can say without a doubt that we will be back. I’ll be asking for Ben again! The atmosphere has a timeless charm that works perfectly with the menu. It wasn’t loud at all so we were able to have a wonderful conversation over our meal. I highly recommend this eatery for the price point. Expect to pay a little more than other local establishments, but also expect to be impressed!
Our first time stepping foot inside Southern Grocery and we fell even more in love as the night progressed. Thank you every one of you that made our anniversary memorable. We will be back for our regular date nights now.
We started with the crab claw appetizer, which was delicious.
I enjoyed the Spa Day cocktail. It was light and refreshing. I tried my husband’s Bravazzi Bellini, and it was good, too.
For dinner, I had the blackened chicken over rice with a twice baked potato, and it was well seasoned and cooked to perfection. My husband enjoyed his burger with onion rings. The only minor note is that the bun had a little too much butter for his liking, but everything else was great.
I love the atmosphere here. It’s relaxed and welcoming, making it a perfect spot for dinner.
Next time, I want to try the Debris sandwich. It looks amazing.
We will definitely be back!
There were four of us girls so we opted to sit at the bar on the corner so we could talk and not take up a table. Ryan, the bartender, was personable and recommended his favorite drink and appetizer… He made us one of the best old-fashioneds I’ve ever had, and the whipped feta appetizer was something I will dream about and come back for. While we were sitting there chatting, the owner even came over and said hello and introduced himself (Wade). The decor is absolutely stunning— so cool everywhere you look inside and out! The menu is something I will be back for with my foodie grown kids to experience, and I cannot recommend Southern Grocery enough!
On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, my party of two adults had dinner at Southern Grocery restaurant, in Sheffield, Alabama.
When approaching the building, I found the architecture to be modern and pretty impressive. Upon entering the restaurant, one sees that its decor is modern and “a feast for the eyes.”
For my entré during this visit — which was my first time dining here — I chose the ribeye steak. And for my sides I chose the twice potatoes and a house salad.
Our waitress was friendly, helpful, and attentive. The meal arrived quickly and was impressively presented.
My ribeye steak was prepared as I requested and was nicely marinated, tender, and delicious. The twice baked potatoes were loaded, cheesy, and delicious as well.
Since I wasn’t overly hungry that evening, I didn’t get a chance to sample my salad there at the restaurant. But, upon eating it later, I found it to be very good as well.
The portion sizes were generous, and I had enough of my meal remaining after I was satiated to take home as leftovers for a future meal.
Needless-to-say, I was exceedingly pleased with my meal there. So, compliments to our waitress, the chef, and the ENTIRE team at the Southern Grocery restaurant, in Sheffield, Alabama, for an EXTREMELY enjoyable dining experience.
Sincerely,
G. Curtis
