I stumbled upon this place last minute because it was one of the few restaurants that would still be open late on a Sunday. The place was nice clean and atmosphere was welcoming. The food choices were some modern twist on some old classics. I had the jambalaya pasta which was surprisingly delicious, i was looking for an original version but this one didn’t disappoint. Their fried chicken was also delicious, flavorful and crispy. The country fried steak was also good. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for good vibes and good food.

We’ve been here twice and it’s definitely a new favorite place to go for very good food, excellent service and the perfect Old City vibe. Tonight was a cold night and not too many people stirring around. We were seated immediately and our server Nick helped us right away. I ordered the 2 piece fried chicken medium spiced with grits and creamed collards. My friends ordered shrimp and grits, chicken tenders and the Southern Mess chicken sandwich.
Everyone was very happy with their meals and we will all be back!

Got the biscuit that comes with fried chicken, bacon, pimiento cheese, and pepper jam. Flavor was great but every part of it was too hard and tough, which made it a little hard to eat. Serving size was too big to fit in your mouth too, and $16 was a little high for what I got. It definitely wasn’t bad though. The sides were especially good. I’d probably try something different if I came back.

Went in middle of the afternoon for a late lunch. Got wings and chicken slider off the happy hour menu along with 4 sides off the regular menu. Wings (chargrilled, medium heat) were good, with plenty of meat. My daughter had the slider and said it was fine. The real stars of the show were the sides, especially the creamed collards, biscuits and sweet potato fries! We’ll be back again to try some of the entrees, especially the shrimp and grits. Service was excellent as well.

Thank you for fitting us in on a busy Valentine’s Day.
We truly enjoyed our meal, despite not having a reservation. Who knew this need a reservation on a Saturday night??
My meal was fabulous, a great mix of sweet and savory. The pork ribeye was so tender and moist. I got a special pepper jelly to do it in, yummy!
The chef also created a special pepper tomato sauce, that was a perfect complement to the pepper jelly.
The mashed potatoes are real!!
And I truly savored the collard green cream.
Thanks!
Happy Valentine’s Day!

A downtown Knoxville staple, Southern Grit is apart of that brunch/lunch style set. With portions that will fill you up when you’re halfway through them, you get your money’s worth sure.
A packed house when we went on a Sun afternoon, the host was still able to seat us fairly quickly. While our server seemed a bit overwhelmed between the bar and her tables, I could not help but notice how the staff worked together efficiently to assist each other and pick up any slack before it became an issue.
A great team in the kitchen put together a meal for for a king! Deeeelish!

We came here to experience some southern food and it definitely delivered! The food is very filling but a little heavy for my taste. The Mitchell burger was very rich and flavorful. I was so full that I struggled to eat the cheddar grits which were also delicious. The Southern Mess burger was also delicious but not as heavy as the Mitchell burger. I really enjoyed the fried okra as it my first time trying it. The servers were also very polite, and the restaurant was clean and not too noisy.

To get started I ordered some fried green tomatoes which came topped with a house-made pimento cheese and spicy honey. The green tomatoes were fried in a proper cornmeal batter. For the main course I ordered shrimp and grits. Cheese grits with a delicious “creole gravy” on top. The creole gravy was very much like an awesome gumbo but with no rice or okra. It had lots of shrimp and andouille sausage to where I was able to have one of the other in every bite. Can’t decide if the food was divine or sinful but either way I consider it a top 3 meal I’ve purchased in my life!

We were in a road trip and decided to stop in Knoxville for dinner. This place has an amazing food. I ordered the meatloaf and it was just perfect. We were 5 people and everyone liked their food.
