Had an amazing experience at Southern Dough for the second time, and it definitely won’t be the last. The first visit was so good that I had to come back. This time I had the Chicken and Dumplings, plus Steak Fingers with French Fries and a Sweet Tea, and everything was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The food is truly awesome and has that comforting, homemade taste.
The ambience is warm and inviting, with a cozy, home-style feel that makes you want to sit and stay awhile. The staff are friendly, attentive, and make you feel like family from the moment you walk in. If you’re looking for great Southern comfort food and a genuine homey atmosphere, Southern Dough is absolutely worth a visit.

This is a very interesting place. It’s very popular so all the tables are pretty full as you wait to order your food. The pies look great and I love the variety of American foods available here. I enjoyed my Southern Chicken Fried Steak and my husband enjoyed his steak fingers. He did order the French onion soup and they forgot to bring it with his food. Luckily the waitress assisted us and let us take it to go.

If you don’t live in the Katy area, drive there, catch a ride, or hitch hike , but get there if you can! Let me tell you, you will not be disappointed. The food is wonderful, served in a lovely relaxed country atmosphere with some of the friendliest people you will ever meet. I had the chicken fried chicken plate with mashed potatoes and green beans, yummy, and my wife had the shrimp plate with sweet potato fries, yum yum. And to top it all off, we had a slice of coconut cream pie. What! When I say coconut, I mean coconut in the pie and coconut in the topping. Did I say I love coconut? I highly recommend that you try the Southern Dough Baking Company in Katy, Texas!

I saw this on one of Good Taste with Tanji episode and family decided to give it a try. I have never driven in old Town Katy and I live only 20 mins away! We walked in and the room was bright and inviting. The menu consists of country comfort food and there were special dishes on certain day i.e. chicken dumpling on Mon etc while the dinner menu is served after 4pm.

We ordered at the counter and cashier provided us a number and we found ourselves a table. Sit outside if the day allows it. We ordered:

Mushroom Swiss burger with zucchini fries – my son enjoyed the burger cooked medium on Texas toast. I tried his zucchini fries and they were out of this world; crispy on the outside and zucchini was perfectly cooked. Dipped in ranch dressing only made it better

French dip with au jus and chips – my hubby did not want to add cheese and he and I shared. The bread was soft and absorbed the au jus just fine. The au just was a bit salty but the sandwich made up as it was under seasoned

Buttermilk fried chicken salad with balsamic vinaigrette – keep it healthy: -) all I can say is yummo; the chicken nuggets were tender and moist but lack seasoning; adding salad dressing helps. The veggies were fresh and loved the avocado in the salad

Don’t forget dessert yall! We ordered the key lime pie which we highly recommend. There was one other place that we had to travel far to get our key lime pie fix but now we finally found this place since its closer to home. I prefer this version because of the crust since it was made with graham cracker crust vs the crust included nuts. The graham cracker crust paired well with this key lime pie and the amount of cream and custard were balanced plus you could taste the lime flavor yet not so tart. The cookies were a favorite of my son especially the snickerdoodle…he told me that eating the cookie remind him of grandma’s baking …Just heaven!

Definitely will return to try other items on the menu and perhaps come in during dinner time.

Had lunch while I was staying for a couple of nights. I love the building and the historic downtown location. The people were friendly. I had the daily special, which was chicken and dumplings, and a slice of pie. The food was good, not amazing but good. Overall it was a good experience.

I’d had this place on my list for a while and finally decided to try it. It wasn’t a busy day, and there were at least four employees behind the counter, yet none of them greeted customers. We waited behind an indecisive guest for over six minutes with no acknowledgment from staff. No one stepped in to take our order or redirect us, even though several employees were standing around with no apparent tasks.

Eventually, we decided to leave. We had only planned to order an ice cream and a coffee—quick and simple—but the lack of basic customer service made it not worth the wait. It’s a cute spot, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to return. There are plenty of closer establishments in Old Katy with much better service.

Excellent small business!! We had the Friday special chicken spaghetti and a Reuben sandwich which were both fresh and great! The pies are awesome as well. No pie pic…sorry we ate them too quickly!

It had been a while since I went to Southern Dough and we went today and WOW. I was reminded of how incredible this place is. If I could give it 10 stars I WOULD. We got the Bulverde and the Grilled Chicken sandwich, side of mac and cheese, and sweet potato fries w ranch. Insane. All of it was out of this world. I am a great cook and I do not enjoy going out to eat because it’s almost always sub par, overpriced food. This was NOT. Fairly priced food, cooked WELL. 10/10.

Love the decor. It was our first time here and was a little confused on the customer service aspect though. We did not see any signs to order at the counter and then take a seat. We thought the people at the counter were ordering their ice cream or food to go and we waited for someone to greet us or to take our order at the table. Figured that out and when paying, a suggested tip amount popped up. We usually tip 20%+, but how much customer service will we be given? While waiting for our food, I saw a regular customer (family of 4) at the next table, clearing off their own table. Is this a new concept I’m not aware of?
Our food was brought to our table and the service was very nice from then on. The chicken fried chicken was very tasty, as well as the fried okra. If the chicken fried steak has the same breading and seasoning, that’s what I’ll be ordering next time. The zucchini fries were good, but the dip that came with it didn’t have much taste to it. Overall, we will be trying other things on the menu, but still confused on how much we need to service ourselves. Since the table needs to be wiped down anyways for the next customer, we decided not to clean our own table and left a tip before departing.
