⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ South of Nick’s – Mexican Kitchen & Cocktail Bar
South of Nick’s is an upscale Mexican dining experience with amazing food, a top-tier cocktail program, and a great atmosphere. Tia was our server and she was outstanding, anticipating everything we needed and making our early dinner effortless. We sat outside for the fresh California air and even though it was a little chilly, the radiant heaters kept it warm and cozy. The bar is fully stocked with a tequila selection that’s second to none, and my margarita was perfectly balanced. I had the Combo Tres Enchiladas and it was excellent, and others loved the Cabo shrimp. We also shared the chips with black bean dip, guacamole, taquitos, and tacos — everything fresh and packed with flavor. I also loved the kitchen windows where you can see how clean and dialed-in the team is behind the scenes. Parking is easy in the automated garage, but I’d recommend going early — and next time I’m grabbing the fire pit seating and working through more of the drink menu.

We loved everything we ordered—the food was delicious and our server was super friendly. It was a Friday girls’ night out, and the atmosphere was perfect. We sat by the indoor open-window area, which felt a bit chilly, so next time I’ll definitely bring a sweater or hoodie. Even though it’s “indoors,” it doesn’t feel fully indoors. The place gets busy in the evening, so I’d recommend making a reservation.

Tried South of Nicks, the service was top notch and the presentation was excellent. The salsa and chips were great as well. However, the burrito was very Americanized with way too much tortilla thick and heavy pieces of flour tortilla that overpowered the filling. The enchiladas were good, but unfortunately, the roasted vegetables were spoiled and tasted bad. I mentioned this to the waiter, and he said he would notify the kitchen. Overall a mixed experience great service, but the food quality was inconsistent.

Stopped in for my first time this past weekend and was honestly really impressed. My family lives very close by in Rancho Santa Fe so we have been going to the Highlands and now one Paseo for many years and have tried all the different restaurants that have come in and out. I would say that Nick’s is one of the better ones. Inside is really well done, it’s very modern with a very large bar and many different types of seating. I also like how open the restaurant is with giant garage door sized entryways so there is really a nice breeze as you’re eating. It’s attached to a shopping center with free multi storage garage parking. Our server was also very polite and everything that we ordered came out very fast. They do have a very large bar in the center of the restaurant so you can also stop in for drinks instead of dining if you prefer.
For this first visit I decided to start with the Shrimp Ceviche and honestly loved it. It was the perfect amount of food and really had that powerful lime flavor to it which I love. Next for dinner I chose the Enchiladas Divorciadas and really enjoyed both of them. They had great flavors and were just really enjoyable, the mole sauce was especially rich and was my favorite part. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone in or near Del Mar, or to anyone in San Diego searching for a great upscale Mexican dining option.

Delicious
Consider it high end Mexican places that still holds the original taste of their authentic food. A is a must try. Plenty of variety in Veggie options and drinks.

Love the vibe and the food. The marghs are neat and the service great even with how busy they are on weekends. Birria tacos, shrimp diablo, mini tacos all yum. Their beans salsa gets consumed fast. Great for dinner with friends because the energy is great.

Had dinner with family while visiting for the Labor day weekend. I was disappointed in the sea bass, it was bland and overpriced. But family liked their meals. Chips and salsa were ok. Customer service was good.

Update review -This restaurant has a classy yet family-friendly vibe, with reasonable prices—most dishes around $20. The complimentary chips & salsa are a highlight, especially the black bean salsa. Highly recommend the Taco Salad, with its crispy bowl, generous toppings, and perfect balance of sour cream and guacamole. The Taquitos are delicious, with standout sauces and sides. We also enjoyed the Enchiladas and Ranchero, both tasty and beautifully presented. Great spot for gatherings, dates, or family dinners—worth a visit!
Previous review – We visited South of Nick’s for lunch on a Saturday and really enjoyed it. The atmosphere is great, and the food is top-notch with generous portions. I had the Taco Salad, which was delicious with a perfectly crispy shell. My husband tried the Birra Taco, and our friends had Shrimp Diablo, Chicken Tortilla Soup, and Filet Mignon Ranchero—everyone loved their dishes. The complimentary chips and salsa were also a nice touch. The decor is perfect for both business meals and dates. Service was a bit slow with the water, but overall, it’s a solid choice with prices comparable to Nick’s. Highly recommend giving it a try!

Very nice dining experience at the bar. Since it was so busy, that was the only place open for our group of 4 and it worked out just great for us. The drinks and service was topnotch by our young bartender, and I believe his name was Trevor. I ordered the dinner special which came with a 4 oz filet, a cup of delicious French onion soup and a very unique and tasty salad. The others in our party had the salmon, the Asian Salad and chicken or fish sandwich. Everything was tasty and well prepared.

Go early if you want a great table or booth. We finally got in with reservations which is recommended. The ambiance and decor are really nicely done. We came here for the food and were not disappointed. We could have just ate the warm tortilla chips 2 kinds of salsa and the warm black beans. Our waitress knew the menu well and suggested the CARNE NORTEÑA which had steak , chimichanga and chicken enchilada. All were very good and a good way to try a little bit of everything. Next we had the CABO SHRIMP which had nice sized shrimps with citrus white rice and garlic bread for the sauce. We would order that dish again! Beside Nick’s in Del Mar this is a great addition to restaurants in One Paseo!
