Ranked one of Eater’s 38 Essential Chicago Restaurants, Soul & Smoke Avondale is the newest location of one of Chicago’s best barbecue and soul food restaurants located at Rockwell on the River, a bustling space to rent a boat, enjoy drinks at Metropolitan Brewing, Judson & Moore Distillery, or visit Metropolis Coffee’s factory store. Enjoy our signature Meat Sampler with 6oz brisket, 6oz pulled pork, 1/2lb rib tips, and 1 hot link, while taking in amazing river views from our patio or glass-walled dining room. This location is in the process of expansion, with a bigger kitchen, new smokers, and a full bar expected in early 2024. We pour our soul into this food, because barbecue is a craft worthy of devotion.

Stopped in today on my way to the Metro for a concert. I ordered the rib tips and a side of Mac n cheese. The meat on the rib tips was so juicy and tender that it slid right off the bones. The crust on the meat was full of flavor. The BBQ was sweet with a touch of tang, the perfect accompaniment to the rib tips. The portion size for the Mac n cheese was just right for me but could have been shared between two adults. Great food, prepared the right way! I would definitely recommend this joint to those looking for great tasting BBQ.

If you are hungry, order 1/2 pound brisket, 1/2 pound pork rib tips and side of rice/beans. You will be satisfied. Excellent BBQ. Shame it isn’t cooked on site, but with BBQ it doesn’t matter as much. Superior service and selection. Highly recommend!

Brisket was no joke – very juicy and perfect seasoned crust. Got the prime brisket dinner and all sides were incredible as well. Went on a Tuesday! Ate outside with beautiful view of the river. Highly recommend!

This is one of my favorite BBQ spots. We discovered it when they had a location at the Time Out Market in Fulton but that location is no longer there. We 20 min drive each way to get their food. The pulled pork is juicy and not super dry, the BBQ sauce is just right, their coleslaw on the pulled pork sandwich pairs perfectly, the Three Cheese Mac n’ Cheese is delicious, and their cornbread muffins are very tasty, not dry at all. This was our first time picking up at the Avondale location, which was kind of hidden away but is right on the Chicago River.
