We went around 2/3pm which was right on time because not long after, it got pretty busy. There aren’t many places to sit, so I assume most people do takeout, but it was worth it either way. The service was decent and everything moved quickly.
If you’re in the area, I’d definitely recommend stopping by!
If you’re in the area and you choose not to dine here, you’re missing out!
I also got a small side of chicken wings and those were excellent, perfectly seasoned and cooked. My husband had the jerk turkey wings with cabbage and yams. The turkey wings were tasty but not very hot, and again the cabbage was bland. The rice and gravy were very good.
The restaurant is small and crowded, so we ate in the car. The cashier was friendly and helpful. Overall, the wings and rice were great, but the fish and cabbage were disappointing. I drove 45 minutes hoping for amazing food, so I was a bit let down. I would give it 3 stars and might try something different if I come back.
Overpriced & overhyped.
The mac and cheese was clearly not fresh. It had that stiff, dried-out texture that only comes from sitting and being reheated, and it honestly seemed like they tried to cover it up by throwing fresh cheese on top. That didn’t fix anything and it just made it more obvious. The flavor was bland, the texture was rubbery, and it tasted like leftovers being passed off as a fresh dish.
The fried chicken was dry, tough, and completely lacking seasoning. It tasted like it had been cooked long before and reheated without any care. No crispness, no juiciness, no flavor and just disappointing.
And the biggest issue of all: the candied yams were not candied yams. What I received was mashed potatoes. Not a different style of yams. Not a mix-up in texture. Literal mashed potatoes. That goes beyond a simple mistake and into either extreme carelessness or outright dishonesty.
The restaurant was extremely packed which would explained why they can’t keep up with the demands of making food fresh. The 2 sides were pipping hot like someone microwaved them and placed them in a tray.
Also; there is nowhere to sit down in the restaurant. The serving lines were not cleaned, neat and presentable. Food service is also about cleanliness. I was incredibly disappointed for driving over an hour to support this black owned business.
As a food service professional for over 20 years myself this experience was beyond the pale. I will not return and recommend to family and friends.
I wish them all the best and hope things will improve.
The food did not disappoint so I can’t wait to go back for seconds. If it wasn’t chilly out I would have stayed and ate at the “cookout”
If you are looking for soul food that reminds you of the best dishes from the family cookout then So Forking Good is a must try!!
I AM EDITING MY PREVIOUS REVIEW!
My husband and I make it a point to stop here when we are in the area, we live in Raleigh. On 12/4 I was in the area stopped in ordered a turkey wing dinner for me, meatloaf dinner for him and cornbread for us both. Get home open my plate to eat and the turkey wing is VERY tough and still pink on the inside. I have always gotten the turkey wings and they are usually falling off the bone. The cornbread was dry and crumbling definitely was not the deliciousness we have become use to. I tried calling and an answering machine picks up giving store info, I tried chatting with the auto bot on the website and it said it was unavailable, I filled out info with my name and email and an auto message advised I would receive a response in 24 hours…that never happened. I could not eat the turkey wing, my sides were good and my husband’s plate was fine minus the cornbread. Something has shifted on the turkey wing prep. Its poor customer service when it is difficult for customers to get in touch with management when something is not right. Needless to say I have revised my review.

Seeing the line when we arrived let us know this food has got to be good and it was!!! The line moved at a reasonable pace, the staff was very friendly and the food….OMG deelish!!! Food is cooked and seasoned to perfection, the mumbo sauce is so yummy! There were seven of us that arrived together and we all ordered different items, baked chicken, fried fish, chicken wings, mac & cheese, yams, collards just to name a few…sooo good. OAN the cakes, german chocolate, red velvet, strawberry are to die for! We will definitely be going back!!
We ordered the two-for-$25 special, which included fried shrimp and wings with two sides—greens and yams—and added cornbread for an additional charge.
Portions were generous, easily enough for two people to share. The yams were mashed rather than chunky, with a syrup-like texture and a heavy cinnamon presence in both aroma and flavor. The greens were tender and flavorful, with bits of meat adding depth. The wings were crisp and well-seasoned.
The shrimp was standard and not especially flavorful, but the cornbread stood out with its moist, buttery texture.
Service was excellent and the wait time reasonable despite the crowd. I’d recommend visiting on a non-busy day if possible, as popular items tend to sell out quickly.
The Good: Let’s start on a high note. The food is genuinely delicious. We ordered smothered pork chops and turkey wings, and both plates were loaded. Everything from the mac and cheese to the collard greens was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The portions were big, the meat was tender, and the flavors were absolutely on point. So no complaints there. This is definitely solid soul food.
The Not-So-Good: Here’s where it got sticky. We were really looking forward to trying their candied yams as a side, but we got a runaround. Initially, they told us it’d be about 15 minutes to get some fresh yams. Then that changed to 45 minutes, and then basically we got told “actually we don’t know how long it’ll be, just don’t count on it.” It was a bit frustrating because someone who ordered after us ended up getting the yams we were told we couldn’t have. And the person who delivered that news didn’t exactly do it with a smile. She had an attitude that kind of soured the vibe.
Overall: I’d give Soul Forking Good a 4 out of 5. The food alone is worth it if you’re looking for good, hearty soul food. But that one customer service hiccup knocked off a star for me. I’m not going to go out of my way to come back, but if you catch them on a good day, you’ll probably have a great meal. Just be ready for a bit of a wait and maybe a little patience with the staff.
