Awesome new chef, new bartender, great waitress and fabulous food. Come down and see for yourself. It is finally the old Sorrento’s happening again!
All in all, I hope they get their act together, there’s a lot of potential in this historical location, but if it has to be this, please close your doors for your own dignity and for the city of Reading.
1. The morning we went to this restaurant, I had checked the website to make sure I knew the hours 11am-11pm on Thursdays. We planned on getting there around 3 for a late lunch/early dinner.
2. Life happened and was unable to get there until 3:45pm. Good thing too because there is a massive sign on the building that you can see in the parking lot that says hours are 4-11pm. No big deal… we decide to wait the extra 15 minutes.
3. Wait until 4:05pm and try to open both the side door and the front door. Both are locked. We called the number on the front of the building and we were told to wait a few minutes and someone would come open the door. No apologies or anything.
4. Finally get into restaurant which had a very unusual atmosphere for a restaurant… we chocked it up to us being the only customers in that huge space. We were directed to sit in the very back of the restaurant… why? I have no idea.
5. The waitress gives us menus then asks us what we want to drink. We are both water people so we both order waters. A couple more customers walk in at this time and our waitress goes and chit-chats with them for a pretty long time. She then disappears and brings us our waters about 10 minutes after we ordered (remember, we are the only people in the restaurant).
6. The waitress brings our waters then sees the Groupon sitting on our table. She asks us if we plan to use that and I told her yes. We ask her a couple questions about the hoagies on the menu because that sounded good to both of us. She disappeared again before taking our order.
7. We then hear her talking on the phone (presumably in a back room or kitchen to her boss). We overhear her saying something like ‘I have a young couple who has a stupid Groupon that’s for $20 worth of food. They are wanting to get hoagies which will bring them slightly above $20. What do you want me to do?’ A slight delay for whatever response she received and she hangs up.
8. She comes to our table and explains to us that we cannot order the hoagies because its excluded on the groupon (which it wasn’t… the only requirement of the groupon was for us to purchase a drink which we were going to purchase). She also then goes on to explain that we must pay full price for any entree that we see on the menu (for example they had a 2 for $20 entree special. Full price they were $16/entree. She says ‘I’ll let you decide what you want now.’
9. She then proceeds to go chit-chat with the other customers that have seated themselves at the bar. It was very evident that she could care less that we were even in the restaurant.
10. We decided that we weren’t going to even eat at this restaurant anymore. We politely told the waitress that we had our minds set on hoagies and weren’t really interested in anything else on the menu. She said ‘I understand’.
11. We walk towards the exit and overhear our waitress talking to another customer behind our backs. She said, ‘yeah that couple gets those stupid groupons…’ We finished walking out the door and didn’t hear what else was said.
Overall impression. By far THE WORST experience I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Zero sense of customer service or understanding. I wasn’t going to fight on the “fine print” of the groupon… but the only requirement of the groupon was that we purchase a drink. If Sorrento’s really thinks that groupon’s are stupid, then why deals on groupon. I would’ve never known about Sorrento’s if groupon didn’t exist.
Got my money back from Groupon. So only thing i wasted was all the gas and time driving to the restaurant and back.
Will never go back and will never recommend to anyone.
Note to Sorrento’s: you lost a chance to make money and possibly repeat business. You should have an exclusion list on the Groupon.
