Sorimmara, a new restaurant in Seoul Plaza on Markham Street in Annandale, offers something different: mala, a spice with a numbing taste on the tongue used in soup and stir fry dishes. Mala comes from China but is popular in Korea, which has some 200 Sorimmara restaurants. The Sorimmara restaurant in Annandale is the fourth in the United States and the first in Virginia. Diners can select from dozens of ingredients on display (fish cakes, mushrooms, noodles, vegetables, and many more) and spice level (mild to inferno) to create a hot pot (malatang) or “dry pot” (mala xiang guo). Sorimmara also offer guobaorou (deep fried pork, shrimp, or other ingredient), fried rice, rice balls, and tteokokki (spicy rice cakes).

If you’re craving a hearty, flavorful mala experience that actually fills you up, this place delivers every time.
This restaurant is kind of self serving, you have to go and choose your own protein and veggies yourself, also with the sauce that you have to make it too. There are five styles of base, dry or soup, depending on what you want. We get the first one on the menu, which is soup and choose only level 1 spicy since I want to enjoy with my broth. My boyfriend got the rosé one with level 2, medium spicy.
Both of our dishes were so good, my soup was perfect level of spicy, I can enjoy the broth with other stuffs that I choose in my plate. My boyfriend rosé also delicious too! If you like creamy texture I would recommend you to try with this sauce, medium spicy is enough for us. I truly hope more people can come here and try this place it’s amazing and never disappoints.
Got the Malatang base soup and the Rosé dry base
I was in a hurry to chow down the cream shrimp kuobarou, but order it as an appetizer and get malatang/xiang guo. (I personally love getting xiang guo…)
Sauce bar is also nice where you can make the sauce to your own liking.
I’ll keep coming back for more
Choose from very many ingredients to be cooked into your hot pot, and different sauces to wrap your dish together. All of the toppings are typical hot pot ingredients, and I love the variety of vegetables, meats, noodles, and fish balls available. You can also choose the spice level of your dish as well, even allowing people who are not good with spice to enjoy mala tang. The sauce bar also allows for addition dipping sauce, and servers will also take your order for addition appetizers you might be interested in. I recommend the pork guo bao rou.
I have gone a few time and will be back again in the future to try different custom hot pot mixtures
