Sonoratown? Zero gimmicks. Just absolute heat.
I went with the cabeza taco and the chivichanga, and both were outstanding.
The cabeza was everything it should be. Tender, rich, perfectly seasoned, and wrapped in one of those thin Sonoran-style flour tortillas that somehow feel both delicate and indestructible at the same time. No unnecessary fluff. No overcomplication. Just pure flavor doing its job.
And the chivichanga? Dangerous. Crispy on the outside, loaded on the inside, balanced and not greasy in the slightest. It’s the kind of thing you start eating slowly and then suddenly look down and realize it’s gone.
This place doesn’t try to impress you. It just does. Simple menu, confident execution, bold flavor.
If you’re in Long Beach and you skip Sonoratown, that’s on you.
I had the Bean & Cheese Burrito and the Carmelo, and both were excellent. The bean & cheese was simple but spot-on, while the Carmelo is pretty hefty, stuffed with plenty of meat and cheese, making it a hearty and satisfying choice. The sides of grilled green onions and sliced radishes were a nice traditional touch.
The restaurant has a fun, colorful vibe with plenty of indoor seating and a relaxed, welcoming feel. Service is quick and efficient. Just note that parking is street parking only, but it’s worth it once you’re inside.
If you’re in downtown Long Beach and want tortillas made the right way, Sonoratown is absolutely worth a stop.
Service was excellent.
Carne Asada Carmelo (giant taco) was sooo good.
Agua Fresca Mango Orange was fresh and tasty.
A+++
Ordered the burrito 2.0 with carne asada. The tortilla was extremely good – great flavor and chew. Unfortunately that’s where it ends. The interior of the burrito was nonexistent aside from pinto beans and salsa. I’m not sure if it’s location dependent or what but the burrito was extremely lacking.
It doesn’t help that they charge for salsa. You need to nickel and dime your customers .50 cents for a small container of salsa? If that’s the case, please make your $14 burrito with better quality control.
EDIT: I also just found out they double charged me…
-Taco meats: Cabeza is good (our fav out of everything). Tripa is very fried crunchy big for anyone who loves very fried. Grilled steak taco with red spicy salsa, and really good too.
– Tortilla is really nice. Better than Azetca!
Red sauce can vary per day made. Today was super spicy, the higher medium side. Green was very very mild.
