If you’re seeing a show at the Mahaffey I can’t find any reason you shouldn’t arrive early and eat and drink here….Super convenient!!! We had a fantastic dinner, several drinks, and then walked 50 feet to our seats. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Upscale Southern food restaurant located within The Mahaffey theater. Good service and atmosphere, but the food we had were quite salty and too much breading. We ordered Crab Stuffed Lobster Tail and Key West Pink for entrees. Then we had Bananas Foster Cheesecake for dessert. It’s so so. The crust is kind of thick. Almost like eating a deep fried cheesecake with thick breadcrumbs.

My husband and I stopped in for brunch after the Dali museum today. We were taken to second floor by a very tired, bored host, I don’t blame him the place was dead. We had a lovely table by floating moon and water view. Our server Alonso suggested a couple cocktails, took our appetizer order which seemed to take a very long time to arrive considering we were the only table in whole restaurant. The braised short rib egg rolls were decent, a bit dry thankfully there was sauce and cheese inside for moisture. We each ordered a sandwich, the brunchwich and St Tropez, my husband liked his w/ peppery bacon on an everything bagel, preferred the croissant it was supposed to come on. The manager came by to check in, he mentioned the bread truck not delivering the correct bread so bought him a beer to make up for confusion, nice gesture. My sandwich was annoying to eat, toast fell apart, missing many of the said items(no caramelized onions, tiny piece of sun dried tomato) on menu and not consistent in the textures, large pieces of artichoke hearts, goat cheese and pesto not spread throughout. Alonso was ok in service, each time he checked in for some reason he only looked at my husband, despite me wanting another cocktail and paying the bill. Do I recommend, no.

This restaurant is destined for success once people discover the incredible food quality. Our reservation for four on a quiet Tuesday evening was a delightful experience. The bottle of wine and exceptional appetizers, especially the pork burnt ends and short rib egg rolls, set the tone perfectly. Following the server’s suggestion, we savored the outstanding pork and short rib dishes. The key lime pie and cheesecake were a divine finale. Impeccable service, well-balanced portions, and a charming ambiance with a big moon made it an unforgettable night. Highly recommend trying them, and I’m eagerly anticipating my next visit to explore more of their menu.

Our waiter was great. Very attentive, yet didn’t hover. The views of the bay are fantastic. We sat right by the edge so we could look out the window. Unfortunately, the food is mediocre at best. It reminded both of us of food served at an event hall for a wedding. Very unremarkable, bland, uninspiring.

We had an amazing experience at Sonata! The warm & friendly staff greeted us at the entrance, scanned our tickets so we were show ready, and guided us to a beautiful table overlooking the marina. On top of the top notch service, the food was artfully plated & delicious!! I will be back for sure! 🙂

Our reservation was at 5pm which apparently is the time the restaurant opened. On a steamy evening, we were unable to enter the building until exactly 5pm. We recommend having a waiting area inside so guests do not have to wait outside in dressy clothes. Next, as the first guests that evening, our party of 4 was sat next to a building pillar which blocked our view of the bay. Parties of 2 that followed were sat at high tops only along the water view, blcoking whatever view we did have beyond the pillar. Finally, the food. Not great at all. My pork shank was flavorless, like it had been quickly cooked in a hot pot of water. Lots of gravy covered the overly priced shank which was heavily salted (Millers Ale House offers a better tasting shank for half the cost!). My friend ordered the overly priced filet which was nothing more than a poor quality steak. Our dessert, a three layer mousse appeared right from a freezer or heavy refrigerator as it had ice crystals throughout. We expressed our disappoint about our visit to the waiter. No manager came by to speak with us. Overall, a very disappointing dining experience at such a beautiful theater in St Pete.

Please stay with me through the whole experience… this was our first time there. It was a little confusing as you enter downstairs. The hostess seemed barely interested in her job, and the set up is such that you enter the door, step in 10-15′ to go to the hostess stand, then step back towards the entry door to go through security and wait for another person to take you upstairs. Very awkward set up. So let’s continue… we got seated (in the center of the restaurant, under bright lights), and then waited… and waited to be greeted, given some water and get the evening started. Well, a good 10 minutes went by (and that is no exaggeration) and then my husband took matters into his own hands and went to the bar to order drinks. The server greeted him and said, I’m sorry but we’re not taking walk up service, to which he replied “well, apparently they’re not doing table service either”. The server, Alexandria, who became the heroine of the story, said that she would take care of us. And that she did!! She truly was a spark of light in what was starting to look like an abysmal dining choice. She was attentive, apologetic for any mishaps that occurred, and proceeded to turn any negativity around. The food was very very good (my husband had the filet, which he said was one of the best he’s had, and I had the scallops- my only complaint was that there were only 3 scallops). The manager did talk to us and also apologized for the lapse in initial service. In the end, the food was very good and they overcame some issues that could have ruined an evening, but we will go there again.

Came to the Mahaffey to see a show. Arrived at our reservation time. Ordered wine and bread. Waited. Finally someone arrived with our drinks. No bread. Server finally came back. Forgot the bread. We ordered. Took awhile but server came back with bread. Then we waited waited waited. 45 minutes. Nothing. An hour, nothing. People were seated, ordered, eaten, and left and we were still waiting. I asked to see the manager. Our show is now only 30 minutes away. Some guy came out. I’m sure it wasn’t a real manager as the first thing he said was “the talent isn’t even in the building, yet”. I told him what we ordered and I said, “this shouldn’t take an hour”. He said, “We prepare everything fresh.” Then I knew he wasn’t really a manager because anyone who deals with food knows braised short ribs must be prepared well in advance to be cooked properly, and soup and salad are mostly prepped before dinner service begins. But what is this??? Magically our food appears. And it wasn’t even very good. They comped us the wine and bread. We didn’t want free drinks. We just wanted a nice dinner. I’d give them no stars if that were an option.

We dined at Sonata after watching a 4 pm show at the Mahaffey on 12/15/23. We loved our experience with Sonata. We checked in after the show downstairs by the big moon and were taken up the elevator to our table, which was very close to the unique and stunning giant moon.
While perusing the menu, full of creative options, we were served a delicious pastry. We ordered the pork and the scallops for dinner. The time from order to receiving the food was just right. The food was delicious. The pork fell off the bone, the gravy was incredible, plus the carrots were awesome. The scallops were cooked perfectly and tasty.
We could not wait to share the bananas foster cheesecake. Wow. A 10/10.
We were glad to have chosen Sonata for our special night out. A shout out to Paris, our server, who was terrific. One of the bosses came by at the end of our meal to check in. A nice touch. We were relaxed and in no rush and told this to our server. Our total time there was 2 hours.
We look forward to going back. Recommend making a reservation. It was busy on a Friday night.
