Our out-of-town family invited us to join them for dinner at Son of Skaliwags. This is where a dive bar meets fine dining. With only three tables in the entire establishment, if you have a larger party, I’d definitely recommend making a reservation.

Step inside and you realize this isn’t your typical bar fare, they describe themselves as a “five-star dive bar,” and the menu truly reflects that blend of casual charm and elevated cuisine. They have even been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

The menu changes often, but their commitment to quality is constant: prime beef, Hawaiian-sourced seafood, and fresh, locally inspired ingredients.

Drinks:
We tried the Bourbon & Currant and their seasonal old fashioned, which was a chocolate cherry traditional old fashioned. The cherry and chocolate were subtle but distinct, making both drinks something we’d happily reorder again.

Apps:
* Crispy shrimp: This is their signature appetizer. The portion was generous with plenty to share. The shrimp were fresh and lightly battered, with an aioli that clung without making them soggy.
* Wagyu tartar: Rich and flavorful, but I wished the beef had been diced finely rather than seemly smashed onto the plate.

Entrees:
We ordered the filet, ribeye, sea scallops, and a trio. The trio includes two chef-selected non-steak options, and you choose the third, which makes it a fun, customizable entrée. All entrées were served with black garlic mashed potatoes.
* The steaks were perfectly cooked, melt in your mouth tender, juicy, and expertly seasoned.
* The scallops were beautifully seared, naturally sweet, with a hint of lemon. A few had traces of Cajun spice (maybe cross-contamination from another dish), which we didn’t mind, but it might be a drawback for someone sensitive to heat.

Dessert:
We ended the meal with a warm, pan-seared lemon-blueberry cake drizzled with mascarpone. It was a lovely, comforting finish — light, slightly tangy, and just sweet enough.

Things to Know:
* They automatically add 22% gratuity, regardless of party size.
* There’s also a 3.5% swipe fee if you pay with card.

Overall:
Son of Skaliwags is a hidden gem, low-key, personal, and surprisingly refined. Whether you’re celebrating or just craving something special, it delivers.

My friends and I had an amazing experience on Sunday evening. We had a reservation for 5pm & from the moment we walked in we were greeted with friendly staff and sat promptly.
We all enjoyed a few appetizers to share and ordered our own entree. My favorite part was that our server was fully involved in the experience from seating us, to taking our order, and assisting with the preparation of our meals. He was timely, knowledgeable, and entertaining… definitely made the experience more enjoyable! We will be back soon.

This place will give you such an unsuspecting experience; especially when viewing the venue from the street. When you walk inside, it’s totally different than you’d expect…

The interior is eclectic, but cozy. The staff are 10/10. You’ll notice your server taking your order, then assisting with the preparation of your order in the kitchen. This hands-on experience is very evident in how they are able to articulate the menu and make educated recommendations.

This place is the epitome of hidden gem! You won’t find better food in this area! A must try!

Was referred by word of mouth, and OMG! One of the highlights of our weekend away. I highly recommend! The drinks were great! Food was delicious (scallops were the best I’ve ever had)! Can’t wait to go back! Definitely recommend!! Nice meeting you Chef Marshall, you have a fine establishment!!

Interesting experience at Son of Skaliwags, which was highly recommended to us. We made a reservation for 6pm, but that was worthless as we were not seated until 6:40. The atmosphere was good, like a dive bar with upscale food choices. Once seated, it took forever for someone to ask for our drink order, then even longer to get someone to take our food order. The blackened grouper was ok at best, probably not a good idea to order an ocean fish in Wisconsin. The bill came and there was a 22.5% tip pre-added to the order, which was crazy based on the bad service. Maybe it was just an off night for the place, but definitely not worth the drive to go there again.

Choice selections of the freshest seafood like sea bass, grouper, giant scallops, and the like. They pride themselves in their dive bar ambiance which is great, but the seafood is top end and prepared to perfection. Dishes are served with modest seasoning, not smothered in sauces, making the flavor of the seafood the main attraction. You can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu. Marshall and his team take care of guests in a personal way which makes the entire experience a real treat.

Looks like a real dive from the outside but don’t let it scare you away. It is a real gem inside. The shrimp and grits were crazy good and the crab cake was very tasty. Service was great. Attentive server. The chef is professionally trained and it shows in the food and presentation. Worth the price.

By far the best food we have had! This Five Star Dive Bar will not disappoint. We went on a Sunday night so it wasn’t busy which was perfect and we were able to talk to all the staff including the chef. Very friendly and welcoming.
The food: We had the Cajun scallops with a dipping sauce for the App. Then New Orleans Pasta and Grouper and Crab Cake for our main meals. Incredible food and left very full. Portions were perfect for the price.

Almost afraid to tell everyone how GREAT this place is. They are sold out most of the time so make a reservation! You will get to know other guests as it’s communal seating but don’t let that stop you!
Everyone is entertaining from the owners to the chef. We were fascinated watching him put out food like a champ! You can see the grill from the bar, it’s awe inspiring!!
The menu is on a chalkboard presumably because it changes frequently. The seafood is fresh fresh fresh! We dined on a Saturday and they were already out of oysters which were delivered on Friday. They must be good!! We will definitely be back!
