This is the second location of Son Del North a Mexican restaurant in New York City specializing in burritos. It was founded by two-time Chopped champion chef Annisha Garcia, who hails from Tijuana, Mexico. Garcia’s burritos are unique in that they feature no rice, just beans, emphasizing other flavorful fillings wrapped in prized Sonoran flour tortillas. The menu includes options like Carne Asada, Pollo Asado, Papas & “Chorizo” (vegan), and Camarón Ranchero, each inspired by different regions of Northern Mexico. The restaurant also offers a variety of toppings such as guacamole, homemade refried beans, and salsas, along with traditional sides and drinks.

First and foremost, their chicken is fully halal, which you almost never find at any other authentic Mexican place. I have checked multiple times with them and they have confirmed. (Important: The beef / grilled steak isn’t halal just btw, and their breakfast burritos do have a bacon option which is obviously not halal also)
And the halal burritos slap as well! Get the bean and cheese with chicken, it’s seriously amazing. If you’re in the area and wanna try a good burrito (and especially if you eat halal and can’t find many options for good Mexican food), you’ve got to try this one. The price is very decent too, $13-14 for a chicken burrito is a steal in Manhattan for what you’re getting with this one. Just don’t plan for dining in as it’s a tiny joint that mostly does to-go and can get very busy at peak hours.
You can see a photo of the menu below:
I was somewhat skeptical about there being no rice. But I was met with a well filled burrito. The steak was flavorful and incredibly tender. The beans were also very well done and complimented the meat as well as you’d hope. The cheese was clearly melted and incorporated well. Normally I could live without it, but the guacamole was definitely needed and worth the extra two bucks.
8.5/10 on the burrito.
I must say though, even for what you get, the pricing is pretty outrageous. Regardless of how good it is, a burrito shouldn’t cost $19 and change after tax. At the very least, guacamole shouldn’t be extra if the burrito is already $16 to begin with. I realize the cost of goods is up these days, but you can do better than that.
This would’ve been a place I frequent on a regular basis, but considering I can get an equally satisfying burrito five minutes away for $13 flat, it won’t be.
Great value too, it’s plenty of food for the price.
Got to talk to the Chef/owner when the first location opened and she was great, could tell she really cared about great food done right.
