Guy Johnson began a Bar-B-Que journey that would change his life and reinvent the flavor profile for smoked meats. What began as a hobby to feed fellow starving college students and friends in need of a meal, has now morphed into a culinary venture in upper Maryland. Swung by this spot craving a full BBQ feast and was met with the harsh reality of the 4th of July weekend: half the menu was missing but not a deal breaker. Ribs, brisket and some catfish were holding it down. Also it was pretty hot inside the building so be aware if you’re sensitive to heat.
Now, the brisket was good. Not mind-blowing, but tender, decently smoked, and flavorful enough to earn a second date. Think of it as the dependable middle child of BBQ meats—won’t let you down, but won’t make you write poetry either.
The real star? The catfish. Perfectly seasoned, crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside—somebody in that kitchen knows what they’re doing with a fryer. Fries were on point too—crispy, salty, and dangerously snackable. I caught myself reaching into the bag like it owed me money.
Al was friendly, vibes were chill, and the music gave it that laid-back backyard BBQ feel. Just a heads up if you visit during or after a holiday weekend: manage expectations, be flexible, and maybe have a backup order ready.
Would I come back? Yep. Especially for that catfish and hopefully some Mac and cheese next time!

The food is delicious, but the pit master does NOT use gloves. I watched him preparing food with his bare hands. I couldn’t eat my bread because my mind just wouldn’t let me because I’m sure he probably prepared mine without gloves as well. Everyone knows that you should use gloves when preparing other people’s food! Well, atleast he didn’t do it in secret. We all could see him.

We’ve eaten here before and LOVED the food. So when we found ourselves right down the road on a Saturday night at 6:20 we figured we would stop by. Pulled in at 6:30 and as we were getting out of the car the employee made eye contact while locking the door. And the posted business hours, next to the sign she flipped over, said they close at 8pm. Guess we will not be coming back here.

Lobby could use some more decor as it seemed bare, but the owner was so nice and very friendly about explaining the menu and had a fantastic music selection playing. The brisket mac and cheese was so good I couldn’t think about any other food for the rest of the day! Also got an order of brisket sliders and burnt ends. The House BBQ sauce was phenomenal and great for dipping my fries into. The chef hooked me up with some fatty meat as I love the fat and was even kind enough to let us try the lemonade and tea… we loved both and got a cup of each! Great service and great food. Stopped here when traveling back to WV from PA, and it was awesome! Perfect algorithm find on Google Maps when I searched up BBQ near me when traveling. A neat thing in the lobby was a map where he had people put a pin where they’re from when they came to eat there. So cool! Would recommend to anyone near or far!

OMG. This food is beyondddddddd delicious. My partner & I just tried it today for the first time and they for sure have returning customers. From the moment we walked in AL greeted us with a smile and explained the menu to us, he even gave us free samples to try before we made our decision. The food is 10/10 ! It’s so flavorful and the snaq-n-cheese is sooooo freaking good. The rib tips are amazing and the green beans are seasoned to perfection. My partner got the catfish box with baked beans and he scarfed it down in 2 seconds which is amazing because he’s a picky eater. They even through in a side of coleslaw!
Overall this place is 10/10 from the atmosphere to the customer service all the way down to the food it’s all hits and no misses. We’ve already determined the next time we have a party we will be ordering catering from SmoQ-N-Meat BBQ!

Great spot! The gentleman was in there working alone. Taking & making orders. Yet he was able to maintain a great attitude and served our food to us with LOVE! Would DEFINITELY come back again…all the way from NYC!

No exaggeration that these are the best ribs I’ve had in I don’t know how long. It’s been years since I’ve had ribs this good. They were tender, fell off the bone, and the homemade sauce had the perfect balance of sweetness and heat. I also got the leg quarter with the dry rub. It was cooked to perfection. The meat is smoked on site. I live 2 hours away in Jersey but planning on driving over the next time I’m down the shore. Do NOT pass this place up if you have the chance.

The lady at the front was very friendly and kind. She was honestly the only reason I stayed and ordered.
Unfortunately they were out of wings & catfish at 1pm on a Saturday.
The atmosphere was the main issue. There were flies flying all around and the front door/windows look like they haven’t been cleaned in forever. Lastly the door to go into the staff area was filled with black marks that could easily be wiped down with a magic eraser or painted. This almost stopped me from ordering but figured the not cleanest places give them best food yet, I wasn’t blown away.
I do hope they clean the front of house as I’d like to return and try the wings or catfish. The ribs were a bit tough but I did enjoy the pulled pork and smaq n cheese.

First time here. I love bbq so I had to stop and try it. Owner was friendly and let me try some samples. The restaurant is clean. Fast service around 4pm Friday. Bought the rib tips and Brisket mac. The sauce is amazing. The meat is tender and juicy. The Mac is creamy and well seasoned. Decent prices. Definitely coming back to try other things. They have a point system to save on future orders. Can’t wait to bring my Dad and son here.
