YES! The best tasting, best bang for the buck BBQ you’ve been searching for your whole Los Angeles life. Here’s why:
1. The $110 #4 combo is THE best bbq deal around. 6 pounds of meat AND 3 pints of sides. You get 1 whole tri tip, 1 whole chicken and 1 whole rack of baby back pork ribs.
It averages out to $18 per pound of mixed meat. Good luck trying to find that deal anywhere else!
2. Taste & flavor are amazing, smokey because of the Oak Fired Open pit bbq. Their dry rub is exquisite. Just the flavor of the meat alone is very satisfying. Go for the gold and add some of their mixed barbecue sauce, similar to Sweet Baby Ray’s.
3. Texture: juicy and moist.
In general, this place reminds me of those roadside Texas barbecues that you typically only find in Texas, usually inside a gas station. Smokin’ Ed’s does BBQ the way BBQ should be done using Red & White Oak wood and some charcoal. This process gives the meet a beautiful smokey flavor, and cooks the meat to Tender perfection.
4. Family owned and operated.. Father, Mom and Son… and a few other great people too.
5. After you order, there’s a couple tables to sit there, or you can get it to go.
Food:
1. Tri Tip: Juicy, moist. If you’re taking it to go, my advice is to leave it whole, and slice it thin at home. It’ll stay juicy or longer that way, and also stay a little warmer during the drive.
2. Baby back ribs: Tender, fall off the bone. Juicy, meaty, savory. The dry rub as a nice savory quality, and chaparral herbs including Thyme, Cumin with subtle notes of Rosemary and Sage.
3. Chicken: Same as above. The skin is THE best part, juicy underneath, crispy on top. The chicken is moist and flavorful.
It’s cooked perfect! If you want it a little more cooked, just pop it in the microwave for a minute on full blast when you get home.
4. BBQ Macaroni Salad. It has a nice mouth feel and chew to it, the elbow pasta is cooked to perfect Al Dente texture. The flavor is exquisite, incorporating notes of barbecue with the little sweetness, and that beautiful creamy coating all around. Black beans round out the texture. It’s creamy, it’s got chew, it has the bbq essence, it’s a winner.
5. Hawaiian Cole Slaw: crowd favorite for sure. It’s cold, it’s refreshing, it’s got that nice coleslaw coating on it with a little bit of a poppy seed dressing note. In terms of texture, it’s definitely crunchy like good coleslaw should be.
6. Fries: they’re cut thin, definitely crispy and crunchy, not greasy or oily at all. I definitely liked them right out of the fryer! Dip them in the barbecue sauce, and you can’t go wrong.
7. Dry rub on the meats: as mentioned above, there’s definitely more of the Chaparral herb spices going on here. You can definitely taste the cumin, and there’s just the right amount of salt and pepper. I love that they nailed this perfectly!
8. BBQ Sauce: I think I know it’s in here, but I don’t want to give it away. Let’s just say it’s Sweet Baby Ray’s with some other stuff mixed in. Definitely tangy, a very mild spiciness to it, and guaranteed to make your mouth water.
Whichever meat you decide to buy, taste it on its own first. Then go ahead and dip in the sauce if you like. You really missing out if you don’t try the meat plain to begin.
Anyways, in summary, this place is amazing! If you’re curious, yes this is the outside place that used to be in the parking lot of “that market” on a street further west. The owners of that market sold the place, and so Smokin’ Ed’s moved to El Camino H.S., then finally settled here at the D.A.V. parking lot.
If you’re a returning customer from years ago, or whether you’re a new customer, you’ll soon find out that this is one of the best deals at best tasting barbecue places around.
