Started by high school friends and Virginia natives Roby Williams and Elizabeth Sexton, SMOHK quickly rose to local prominence, being voted as one of Richmond’s top 3 Best Local Barbecue Restaurants in the 2018 Style Weekly Readers’ Choice poll. In 2019 we were humbled to be voted the winner of USA Today’s 2019 Readers’ Choice award for Best Brunswick Stew in Virginia! We enjoy catering for business gatherings, private parties, rehearsal dinners and weddings, and can customize our menu to suit your occasion, including specialties like shrimp and grits or our killer breakfast quiche.

A Richmond gem, nestled in the cities most unique location in the heart of Scott’s Addition for over eight years. If you know, you know. Upon entering you are greeted by the owner Roby who will happily walk you through the menu. Shoe stoppers in this man’s humble opinion: pulled pork , the ribs literally dripping and melt off the bone, New Brunswick Stew, and collards done right! Do yourself a favor, skip the line and get some true blue BBQ at Smohk.

Independent BBQ places, which also have the best food, are usually hard to find and are supported by loyal fans. Smohk is tucked away; go to the side door next to the big smoker, and order your food not ten feet from the smoker door. The pit master will answer any questions and then serve up the tenderest brisket or the most delicious pork belly. Dine inside where it is clean and cozy or sit outside under the umbrellas. Smohk’s neighbors(a brewery) also have outside dining so it can be hopping. The Brunswick stew is award winning and delicious but don’t let take away from the BBQ. Search out Smohk.

As a grill master I must say that this bbq is damn GOOD!!! I highly recommend this place to anyone who likes smoked/grilled bbq. The brisket is very tender and delicious. The ribs fall off the bone and are delicious. The smoked mac & cheese is delicious! The collard greens are delicious!

Tried this place for the first time, had a great time! There’s another BBQ Spot down the street that was PACKED, line out the door. We hit this spot because we didn’t want to wait, and honestly this place was so good! Outdoor seating awesome, and they have indoor seating as well. Watch the step down as you enter the restaurant. Brisket and Pulled Pork were delicious, flavor was there. Choose your own sauce for each type of meat. Only note would be that I wish the Platter (1 meat, 2 side dishes) would also come with a drink. Other than that, great price, good flavor, and an awesome spot in RVA!

The owner was beyond friendly and offered a lot of great suggestions. I really enjoyed the ribs and sweet potatoes. The food was priced very well, and the serving sizes were big. The food also came out quickly and was delicious. Try the hot bbq sauce, was really good.

We accidentally walked into the bar/brewery next door at first (apparently it happens a lot), but it turned into a good laugh. Once we found the BBQ spot, we were blown away.
The brisket was excellent, and the ribs, juicy, tender, and packed with flavor, completely changed my other half’s mind about ribs generally being dry. Everyone was super friendly, and I believe one of the owners (friendly guy with a white beard) stopped by to chat and even showed us a t-shirt about the whole obscure location experience.
This is officially our new go-to BBQ stop whenever we’re passing through Virginia.

This place is definitely a hidden gem.of Richmond. I was guided by that great aroma and the flavors didn’t disappoint. If you are in Richmond, this is a great place to stop by. I highly recommend the ribs and brisket. The best I’ve had on this coast!

If you’re a BBQ lover, you have to try this place! The brisket is absolutely melt-in-your-mouth tender with the perfect smoky flavor—each bite just gets better and better. And don’t even get me started on the pulled pork! It’s juicy, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The meat is so soft it practically falls apart. The sauces are top-notch too—whether you prefer tangy or sweet, they’ve got you covered.
This is hands-down some of the best BBQ I’ve ever had. If you haven’t been yet, make sure to go ASAP. You won’t regret it!

The food was incredible. I had a bowl with ribeye and it was the perfect balance of meat, rice and vegetables. The sauce was a great blend of sweet and tangy. There was no wait probably because it is tucked away behind the brewery. I will return!
