Visiting town and wanted to try some barbecue. Chose Smitty’s. Bought some ribs. They were ok. They weren’t fall of the bone but had deep smokey flavor and tender. Since I like a saucy ribs. I made some BBQ sauce and made it work.

Went here on my birthday and paid over 60$ for some of the driest brisket I have ever had. Also got stared at the entire time I was eating by a creepy waitress. Guys at the pit were nice but once you get past that expect zero customer service. The sausage was good and seeing the pit once was cool.

The burnt ends ! ! ! The best.
Everything was delicious and rendered perfectly. Brisket, ribs, sausage, prime.

The staff were happy to chat with me about everything from the post oak they used to smoke the meats to how long the the meats sit in the smoker to the building’s storied history. Had an amazing time that I really wasn’t expecting!

A surprise gem under the Texas Sun!
Thank you to the staff and esp Ricardo for the history. I’ll be back for sure.

This place serves old school barbecue. Cooked over smoke pits with the live fire near the entrance of the establishment. The brisket and sausage was very good.

What’s not to like about Smitty’s? I love their BBQ. Great for special occasions too!

Their brisket is always moist, tender and well seasoned. Perfect smoke ring, bark and flavor.

Their sausage rings hands down are the best in Texas! No joke! They have that exceptional crisp snap when you bite into them and the texture and flavor is amazing.

Is the “no forks” thing a liability issue? Did someone injure themselves on one of your plastic forks? Because I just had some of the toughest, driest brisket I’ve ever had in my life, and I think the only thing that made it at all palatable was soaking it in the knock off Rudy’s bbq sauce this place serves.

Exceptional ribs and wonderful, flavorful sausage. So, I’m incredibly thankful I had no need to drown either in the knock off Rudy’s bbq sauce. The sides were meh, the pickles were soft.

I implore someone with an actual stake in this restaurant to visit the store and try the brisket. It should be criminal to charge brisket prices for the shoe leather this place serves. I’m guessing anyone that cared about their legacy in this place has no direct involvement anymore, but I personally would be embarrassed that anything associated with my name served such a poor caliber of brisket to anyone. I wouldn’t eat that brisket again, even if someone offered it to me for free. I didn’t even bring the remaining brisket home for our dogs.

My takeaway from this for anyone that wants to eat here:

Get some pork ribs, get some sausage. Both are worth the money. Steer clear of the brisket, please. Skip sides unless you just have to have them. The tea was fresh.

Smitty’s is a great old school Texas BBQ experience. Went on a tour during the morning and ate lunch afterwards. Very cool place with lots of history. Ordering the meats straight from the pits was awesome. Foodwise the sausage and brisket are very good. Sides are not bad. Prices aren’t terrible either.

We got the brisket, turkey, and jalapeño sausage. The brisket was fall-apart juicy and the turkey was so tender and delicious. We didn’t get any sides besides pickles and jalapeños, but we didn’t get the banana pudding – theirs kept the nilla wafers separate. No forks is the moto and the reality, so come with clean hands. Credit cards accepted, saw some reviews said cash/check only.

I love the old Texas vibes of the dining area. Plenty of room, with extremely friendly and attentive staff. The ONLY reason the food didn’t get 5 stars is due to the ribs and brisket being slightly dry but no lack in the flavor department at all!!!! And tasty potato salad and Mac and cheese were the perfect complement for meats that didn’t need a drop of sauce! I will definitely be a return customer.

One of the oldest BBQ places in south central Texas. A family owned restaurant in the heart of historic downtown Lockhart, Tx.
I like to think that I am a BBQ enthusiast and this place is not only old school but some of the best BBQ in the state. Located between Austin and San Antonio.
If you are looking for a nice drive and some excellent smoked meats, PLEASE give this place a visit.
