The staff were gracious, helpful and willing to engage and ensure that our interests/adventures were realized. (I requested chop sticks to eat the bay scallops dish and the appeared!—I am sure they would have gone to the nearby take out to get them, but they had
some available from a recent ramen pop up.)
Extensive wine list and sommelier found us a bottle at our price point and delivered!
Funky under street level space. So nice to have a relaxing and fun meal without the pretentiousness that has become far too common.
(NYT review gets it so right)
This restaurant comes close to excellence in every way — creativity, flavors, and presentation. Nothing is missing! The lentils with foie gras, for example, were absolutely delicious, the lobster roll possibly the best of my life and the donut dessert was simply divine.
Highly recommended — a must-try culinary gem!
The menu is thoughtful without trying too hard. The obvious favorite was the buckwheat pancake and crudo while the puntarelle salad was a pleasant surprise: fresh and crisp, a little bitter in the best way, and perfectly balanced.
The tuna dish seemed to have seasoning salt in addition to Maldon finishing salt on top of salted raspberries which altogether made the dish borderline inedible with how salty it was. We had the buckwheat pancake next which was very tasty but also quite salty. The pancake may have been a bit burnt as well but the whitefish salad was very nice on its own. We opted out of having the pancake “Neptune Style” which apparently included caviar which I’m glad for because it would’ve been even saltier. The lobster roll was good, and we understood the effort that went behind it based on the demo videos made but the effort didn’t quite live up to the flavor of the roll (it was a bit bland flavor wise but yet still very salty?). Also for a $38 roll, there wasn’t a ton of lobster and our bun was a bit burnt as well. The chowder and rice I really wanted to like, but I don’t think I liked the fact the chowder was aerated. It made the soup taste less rich and the rice kinda stodgy in comparison. The clams were also very chewy and a mix of undercooked/overcooked and again was really salty altogether. We then had the black cod and prawns which was probably my favorite dish of the night mainly because it wasn’t as salty as the others. The black cod was cooked well but was a bit bland by itself. The shrimp was cooked well too but maybe a tad salty by themselves. The flavor of the broth was quite nice and we really liked the tartness of the greens. Overall a good dish but a bit underwhelming for the high price point. We ended the night with the blueberry donut and corn ice cream. The corn ice cream was fantastic, super rich corn and butter flavor – honestly could stand on its own as a dessert. The blueberry donut was undercooked and a little stodgy. Flavor was okay, a little too tart and also unexplainably salty? The donut dough itself seemed salted so I’m not sure why it had to also have finishing salt on top. For drinks we had the seaweed martini (again extremely salty) and the green swizzle (fine, but a little underwhelming as well).
Overall I really wanted to like the dishes. It’s evident there was a lot of thought and technique put into the concepts, but I think the basic execution could have been better (i.e balance, seasoning, flavor, cook). I honestly expected a bit more as Smithereens seems very chef driven so you’d expect those elements to be perfect.
In terms of service, we sat at the bar and service was okay. Our server, who was also the bartender, didn’t really speak to us, nor explain the menu or dishes in depth. A lot of the food runners as well didn’t really explain the dishes as they placed them in front of us so we had a lot of questions as we ate. No one was rude though and the food came out decently fast. Not sure if we had an off night (last cover on a Tuesday) but I was left feeling underwhelmed given the reputation and especially since we almost spent $300 in total for the whole dinner.
However, our server made our visit quite unpleasant.
We opted for the beverage pairings, on the menu it writes it includes 5 pours in total. By the time we finished all the savory courses, our sever came over to ask if we wanted desserts and drinks. The way he put it sounded like the drinks would be extra cost, so I said no at first, but my partner asked to clarify if it’s included in the pairings? He then said “It is included, we aren’t stingy. We just don’t have many dessert wine options, but we are always happy to pour something fun for you to try.”
At the end of the meal, he brought us the check, we asked again about the pairing as we total only had 4 drinks each not 5 (not generous pours, either), our server responded: “So you think you are owed one more drink?” We were nice about it but were absolutely stunned by how he dealt with the situation. His tone may sound alright but his choice of words really rubbed us the wrong way.
I would love to return, for the food that was too good to pass but this experience was simply disappointing.
Side note, it was my birthday celebration and we put in a note when making a res. However, we got zero gesture about it. Right at the time I thought maybe they just don’t do celebrations, a couple at the counter were treated with champagne for their anniversary and a table in the back was congratulated with a comp dessert… it’s normally not important to us but seeing others get it but not us just feels weird.
The desserts are not to be missed. The celery ice cream float just felt like eating a soda drink and it just blew my mind. On another hand, the blueberry donut is warm and fluffy with a side of corn ice cream, got us on cloud 9.
The whole atmosphere has a minimalist speakeasy vibe with good playlist. Even tho its low ceiling yet its easy to have a conversation and the room is not loud like most.
All plates are shareable sizes yet small, so don’t expect to walk away stuffed— in the best way. Everything was light, super fresh, different and delicious. The flavor combinations of each plate packed a punch.
We also asked for a wine connoisseur who recommended a fabulous bottle of goth red wine from Germany. We were so happy with our experience. It’s definitely a date night vibe.
As most of the reviews share, the lobster roll and the buckwheat pancake are definitely worth trying. The desserts were also unique and satisfying at the end of the meal. Everything was delicious but nothing was so good that it was memorable.
Nonetheless, a great spot to grab a few bites and a couple drinks
