This is a must go if you’re in Oakland! I’ve been here several times and I’m never disappointed. You get bang for your buck and it’s blacked owned. The food is full of flavor and you will most likely be leaving with leftovers. The service is good and the place is a vibe, they usually have music playing in the back ground.

10/10 would recommend !! My mom & I visited for the first time today around 3:30 pm, and we had a great experience. Our server John was attentive & the atmosphere was relaxing. The music was low enough to where we could hear it,but we could also have a conversation with one another. We started with the wings as an appetizer,I would rate those a 7/10 just because they didnt have much flavor. I ordered the fried catfish plate with crack and cheese & greens which was a 10/10. The portion was good for the price,the flavor was amazing and I had a lot left over to take back to my hotel. The bathrooms were clean too which is another reason why I gave a 10/10 overall rating. If you’re ever in the Oakland area I would suggest you go try Smellys!!!!

Have you ever eaten something and instantly regretted it like your body just knew it didn’t belong there? That’s exactly how I felt after this meal swear to god I’m writing this in my car on literally hurting right now lol. The photo attached is the salmon plate. And what you’re seeing isn’t sauce… it’s oil. Straight-up oil.
Now, credit where it’s due, our server was AMAZING and handled everything with grace. But when I asked about the oil, his response was, “Salmon produces oil.” I had to laugh cause ain’t no way, love.
But seriously, to the owners:
How are we calling this fine dining when the plates come out with drips on the sides?
How are we calling this fine dining when ketchup bottles are crusted over and the hot sauce bottles look like they’ve been there since opening day?
How are we calling this fine dining when every side dish is swimming in oil? How are we calling this fine dining when not a single manager or owner stopped by to acknowledge the issue? One thing is consistent with the reviews both in here and on the street “oily and very expensive”.
Presentation matters. Standards matter. And if you’re going to charge fine-dining prices, the experience should match. Wishing nothing but success to a black owned business and I would have tried to say this to management but no one came by after returning the plate.

Love the food. I had the Oxtails Special with mac n cheese …others had the steak and the fish dishes. Fish was not the best according to my family but EVERYTHING ELSE was amazing .

Another year (62) my children took me to one of my favorite Soul food restaurants Smelly’s!!!
I had the fried 3-combo, seafood mac and cheese and the garlicky green beans and we ordered the charcoal broiled oysters with the hot garlic bread.
The surface was superb. They have some of the best employees ever. And because we got there right when they opened, I guess we were blessed to be served by all young men. It was nice to see that for a change. They were very professional, very kind.
The special for today ( 6/22/25 ) Oxtails over Rice, Garlicky Green Beans and Mac & Cheese. Got that for my husband who wasn’t there. When I got home, he ate it. It was still hot, had oxtails in Vallejo, California, and he said he hadn’t had a meal like this forever. It was fantastic. ( TABLE 13 )

Someone came and got our drink order (at the end this arrived as a separate bill)
Waiter came and gave us water and answered questions about the menu and the music starting playing a little louder by then and RNB and Soul Food vibe.
The food is delicious my dad goes there’s not a cook back there there’s a chef while I was saying well the chef must love me because this food was made out of love I can’t wait to eat my leftover and pretty affordable for seafood/

Honey Tea
The food was okay but our waiter Jason was amazing. I would suggest the green beans, yams, grilled shrimp, and fried oysters. The creole salmon lacked flavor and wasn’t glazed well. I definitely could have used more seasoning. The Mac and cheese was different but okay. The price for the portion size was decent. Overall I would recommend trying other items on the menu. The seafood fettuccine looked delicious which was ordered by another customer. I’ll be back and hopefully the meal will be better next time!!!
