This is the kind of pizza other places nearby should be aiming for. And honestly, if this shop were on the East Coast, it wouldn’t feel out of place at all. That’s high praise without being over the top.
All in all, it’s an easy 5-star pizza for Southern California and a place I’d happily return to when I’m in the neighborhood.
Second visit update:
Got an “America’s Finest Slice”. It featured a superb crispy sesame seed crust with a nice cornicione, but overall the slice was a bit too dry and the flavor of the sauce could not be discerned (The cheese slice I got last time suffered from the same dryness). It’s supposed to have Italian Pizzutello Tomato, but it only had a microscopic piece that added nothing to the overall flavor. The cupping pepperoni was excellent, but could have used a few more pieces for the $7.80 cost. And the cheese is, well, not very cheesy.
My solution to the dryness problem was to get a side of their excellent pizza sauce, which was 81¢ for a tiny cup. They should really offer a free cup with all the slices given their cost is no more than 7¢. I guess ordering a fresh whole pie rather than a slice that’s been sitting out would improve the sauce situation.
I’ve gone to two other locations, Tony’s in San Fran and pizza rock in Las Vegas. Was super excited to hear Tony opened a location in San Diego. Wasn’t disappointed, definitely recommend, incomparable to other pizza spots in Little Italy
The pizza at Slice House is quite good. Depending on what you get, it’ll be between a 6-10 out of 10. The problem is that it’s not $6-7+ per slice good…those slices should be $4-6 max. Sauce (ranch, aioli, etc.) is extra, and not cheap. After tax and tip, you’re spending $10-12 for a single slice of pizza. Granted they’re relatively large, but most people would still need 2 slices for a meal, not to mention a drink or a salad/side, and now you’re at $20-30 per person, for pizza, a classically “affordable” dish.
The service is hit or miss depending on who is working that day. It’s usually good ‘enough,’ but again…for the prices, you’d expect a bit more.
The atmosphere is okay — they leave the doors open all the time, so as other reviewers have mentioned, depending on the day, you may be sharing the space with a party of flies. That’s not necessarily their fault, per se, but keeping the doors closed would probably help.
I will eat here occasionally, but I’d eat here 2-3x more often if they took a scrupulous look at their pricing and made some adjustments. After all, we’re talking about pizza here.
Final note, they have quite a few vegetarian/vegan options, but I’ve never seen any of those options available by the slice, with the exception of a cheese pizza. Occasionally having some of the plant-based ‘meat’ options on the available slices would be nice, even if it were schedule-based.
