SIX Brasserie – Restaurant at The Varsity Hotel Cambridge
Reviews
Service was ok (though could have been a tad bit more attentive).
The food was great! I ordered the Prime Fillet Steak with mashed potato. The meat was cooked to perfection (medium-rare) and very tender, the mash very smooth and creamy. As a side, I had ordered the Broccoli with Chilli and Garlic, though it was not quite as spicy as I had expected.
But definitely a great meal with a great view, and I will surely come back next time I’m in Cambridge (then perhaps with a table on the roof terrace?).
We visited Six in Cambridge for my wife’s birthday with our children, despite the mixed reviews, because she had previously enjoyed it. That decision turned out to be a serious mistake.
Before we had even ordered, the menus were noticeably dirty, which already raised concerns about the restaurant’s overall cleanliness and attention to detail.
From there, things only got worse. A member of staff dropped what looked like whitebait on the floor, and every single employee who walked past simply ignored it. Under our own table, shards of glass were left scattered—an obvious and unacceptable safety hazard, especially with children present.
The food experience was equally disastrous. The ribeye steak, ordered medium rare, arrived rare with fries that were barely warm. When we sent it back, it returned with a completely different sauce than the one we originally ordered. The half chicken with mash was another failure—despite the waitress reconfirming the side, it still arrived with the wrong one.
Adding to the chaos, behind us a bartender decided it was appropriate to kill a spider by dramatically smashing two bar trays together, creating a loud bang in the middle of service. Immediately after, another bar staff member dropped a can which spilled down the side of the bar and onto the floor. Multiple staff members walked past it without a second glance, and when someone finally picked it up, they still didn’t bother cleaning the spill left behind.
The cocktails were no better. The Cherry Bakewell arrived without any amaretto and packed with gin instead—clearly made by someone who didn’t know or didn’t care what the drink was supposed to be.
After raising all of these issues, the manager offered complimentary desserts, yet even those were served incorrectly. At this point it was obvious that the problems run far deeper than isolated mistakes—the entire operation suffers from poor standards, poor training, and a concerning lack of care.
The quality of the food, the service, and the overall hygiene were shockingly poor, especially for a restaurant charging premium prices.
In summary: an appalling experience from start to finish. Do yourself a favour and spend your money anywhere else.
Staff are so friendly and professional
The manager has time for everyone and the food is excellent as is the silver service.
Beautiful room with a wonderful view of Cambridge’s old buildings.
In the evening, we had the opportunity to enjoy the restaurant, which has a beautiful view of the surrounding area @sixcambridge
The food was top-notch. Whitebait, Sunday roast, and a perfectly matching bottle of South African wine.
Cambridge will remain in my memory forever
