I absolutely love it, it’s light, tasty, and packs a bit of heat! I’ve had this at other Thai restaurants but never with red chilli so it was tasty but I prefer without the spice. Highly recommend! Comes with shredded carrot and chunks of roma tomato and dried red chili. It was a nice portion for $10.95, and goes great with shrimp. Very tasty.
We also ordered the banana blossom salad for $11.95, which I enjoyed, it is served warm with cold white cabbage on the side and it is very unique tasting and I truly enjoyed it. It has minced chicken throughout, creamy base, with crispy onion pieces on top and a little bit of shredded carrot for some crunchiness. It was a generous portion, enough for two people. I recommend trying if you’re an adventurous eater.
We ordered the Tom Kha soup for $6.95 which was just okay wouldnt recommend, they definitely over did it with the lime juice and it was extremely tarty. It tasted very similar in terms of creamy coconut flavor like the tomato curry (minus the tartiness). Wouldn’t recommend.
For our entrees, we ordered the Kang Pa curry with chicken as the protein, the chicken was very tender but this curry is more like a soup curry and does not contain coconut milk. It is very spicy! Comes with a side of rice for $15.95 in these small clay pots. I think the portion was small for the price and should be more like $12.95 given the portion.
I had the Massaman tomato curry with shrimp (which is extra fee) for a total of $19.95. This curry also comes with a side of rice and is not spicy. It has coconut milk as it’s base so it’s very creamy. They were generous with the shrimp I had about 7 in mine but the potatoes that came in the curry tasted very weird like they were expired or something, I didn’t eat them since they only gave two very tiny pieces. I do like that they add peanuts which adds some texture since the curry is so smooth and creamy. I think the price for this dish is also inflated, the original price is $15-16 without shrimp. I think given the size it should be around $12 for the curry (without shrimp). Shrimp was an extra $4.
Overall, everything was just mid. Most of the dishes taste the same especially if they have coconut as their base and they over did it with the lime and lemongrass for some. Out of all the dishes we had, the two salads were the ones we enjoyed the most with the Som Tum green papaya salad being our favorite.
In terms of decor, it’s cute and cozy but limited seating. In terms of service, the waitress took a while to tend to us and forgot our straws and I had to ask twice and ask for a water refill. A large group came in after us and it seems like they forgot about us when the large group arrived.
The food was decent, but not good enough for me to return.
Parking is impossible.
The Pad Talay was flavorful, filling and offered a great variety of seafood. You must have their Thai Coffee.
Their food portions are great and their prices are very affordable- especially for downtown Chicago.
We were seated quickly and the customer service was great.
There is limited street parking. This restaurant is best accessed by foot.
This restaurant is not wheelchair accessible.
I will definitely be back on my next trip to Chicago.
