Side eye is such a great addition to the neighborhood! The staff are warm and welcoming. I love the interior and the large wood bar they added to the old Bistro La Minnet. It’s a great place to come assemble with friends.
The fries are a wedge fry, which typically I don’t like, but these are INCREDIBLE. I don’t understand how they are able to get the outside perfectly crisp with a soft interior, but it is nothing short of a miracle. I’ve had them several times since they opened and now, I crave them daily dipped in their sour cream and onion aioli.
The chicken with beans is also delicious and filling. The chicken was tender and I wanted to drink the chicken jus that came with it!
I would love to give them 5 stars and think that with a few changes, that would happen.
1) The burger was a disappointment. The burger patty and the house made brioche are incredible. The burger is very juicy with a mouthwatering savory flavor and the brioche is warm and fluffy with a crisp outside. My complaint is a COLD Camembert cheese. Camembert is one of my favorite cheeses, but this does not work on a hot burger. You end up with a warm beef patty, a cold slightly firm cheese, and a disjointed texture. It would be more interesting if they made the slices of cheese thinner and then added the Camembert cheese to the burger ~90 sec prior to taking off heat so that it has time to soften and melt. It also says the burger comes with pickles but they were definitely just thinly sliced cucumbers. Adding actual pickles or pickled shallots with a light brush of Dijon would help balance out the fat to acid balance which felt a little off.
I also think they should have two options for the burger and have a regular burger with cheese that easily melts for people who don’t want a unique option. They could easily use the Mimolette cheese they use for the Caesar salad for that.
2) the Caesar salad is also just taking a good thing and adding too many steps to it. My husband and I love Caesar salad but the massaged cabbage with butter lettuce did not allow for the same crunch that everyone loves about a traditional Caesar salad. The chef makes everything in house, which you can tell because everything is fresh and beautifully assembled, but they are adding a lot of unnecessary work to a classic salad.
As I said, this place is great and a wonderful addition to the neighborhood and I will definitely be back soon to try the other things on the menu. I’m also excited to sip a glass of wine from their excellent wine selection on their patio once the weather warms up.
A wonderful cocktail list, with the Vieux Pommier being my favorite. The wine list is incredibly sourced and feels thoughtfully connected to the food menu. Anxo Cider on draft, yes please!
Everything we ate was delicious as well, with several standouts:
French Onion Soup: Well balanced, and among the best broths you’ll find in the city.
Bread & Butter: Trust me, just order it.
Green Salad: Simple in the best way possible.
Caesar: Exactly as a Caesar should be, anchovy-forward.
Moules Marinières: The kitchen has a hit on their hands with this one. You’ll be asking for extra bread to soak up the broth.
Stuffed Cabbage: Tender beef cheek paired with a savory tomato bordelaise sauce makes this a dish that you’ll want to tuck into during the winter months.
Half Chicken: An incredible price point for a dish of this level. By this point in our meal, it was clear the kitchen has meticulously worked through their sauces, broths, and stocks.
Highly recommended, and was told the TV’s will be showing the cities sports games. Catch me here watching the Phils this spring.
The menu is French inspired, but doesn’t feel haughty. I can see us returning both for a quick week night meal at the bar or bringing out of town friends we’re trying to impress.
We’ll be back soon to try out the rest of the menu!
