Visited Shri Dakshin today with three friends and I have to say – this was one of the most memorable South-Indian dining experiences I’ve had in Canada. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly and seated right away despite the restaurant being lively and busy. The ambiance feels clean, welcoming, and authentic without being overwhelming.
We ordered a variety of items to truly test the menu – Bangalore dosa, masala dosa, ghee dosa, idli-vada combo, along with fresh chutney, sambar, and masala tea. Every single dish felt like it was prepared with intention and tradition.
Food Breakdown:
• Bangalore Dosa – Soft inside, crisp outside, generously filled, flavorful potato masala with just the right spice.
• Masala Dosa – Classic, comforting, and perfectly portioned. The batter tasted fresh and fermented just right.
• Ghee Dosa – Aroma alone could sell this dish. The ghee adds richness without being heavy – golden, crispy perfection.
• Idli-Vada Combo – The idlis were pillowy soft and warm, genuinely melt-in-mouth. The vada had a crisp shell with a fluffy inside; paired beautifully with the chutney and hot sambar.
• Chutney & Sambar – The chutney tasted freshly ground – not bland or watered down. The sambar felt home-made, full of spices and vegetables, almost nostalgic.
• Masala Tea – A must-order. Served hot, perfectly balanced – not too sweet, not too bitter – a strong ending to the meal.
Service:
Staff checked on us multiple times without interrupting and ensured our water and chutneys were refilled. We felt taken care of rather than rushed.
Overall Experience:
Clean environment, fast serving time, and truly authentic flavors. It genuinely felt like a trip to South India . Prices are fair considering the portion sizes and taste quality.
Highly recommended whether you’re craving breakfast, tea-time snacks, or planning a proper meal with friends. We will definitely be returning.
A well-deserved 5/5.
The Dosa was good. The Mysore Masala was amazing spice to it… and the sauces were fresh.
Like the food and appetizers but there is always room for improvement.
However, the atmosphere was too dark. very low light and kind of dull. But overall good experience. Must try Indian place..
It’s frustrating to see portions reduced like this, especially for regular customers. We hope the management takes this feedback seriously and reviews the portion sizes, as the current value for money doesn’t feel the same as it used to. These idli’s are so small.
