Shokupan Bakery is a small cottage bakery based in Bethesda, Maryland, specializing in fresh, all-natural Japanese milk bread and uniquely crafted baked goods. Our loaves are preservative-free and known for their soft, fluffy texture—true to the traditional shokupan style. We also offer delicious Ube Coconut Buns, Matcha Marble Milk Bread, Cinnamon and Chocolate Shokupan Cubes, Cherry Dragonfruit Buns and Loaves, and more. Pickups are available from 5:30-7 pm in Bethesda on bake days, and we offer delivery to select locations in the Washington, DC area and for some custom orders. The address is for preorder pickups only. We don’t have a storefront at this location.

Their milk bread is delicious! It’s fluffy and soft, and the texture is perfect. Since this place opened, I’ve tried the premium, matcha, and sakura loafs, and the cinnamon cubes too. We loved all of them (my personal favorite is simply premium), but the cinnamon cubes were a mega hit. They all disappeared before I even had a chance to take a photo.
Ordering online is easy. You do have to check what varieties are available on each bake day, but so far I’ve liked everything. I’m really glad a milk bread place opened up in Bethesda!

Absolutely delicious as a snack or as standard bread. I got the sakura buns and the dark chocolate cube and both were exceptional, they also included a free cinnamon cube because it was my first order and that was so nice. Honestly it was crazy expensive but I will order from here again anyway.

This is the BEST shokupan in the DC metro area. I lived in Japan and ate toasted shokupan with butter for breakfast almost every day. In DC, I have tried MANY shokupan loaves from HMart, Silla, and smaller Japanese markets. This is the BEST: perfect balance, perfect crumb/texture. You will become addicted. So keep an exercise habit and reward yourself with a pillowy crispy golden toasted slice with melted butter as a reward and life will be good. Also, I can’t believe they bring it to my door—can’t handle how convenient, luxurious and special this bakery is.

Tried the classic and premium Shokupan and was happily surprised with both (don’t ask me to choose!), both loaves were kindly delivered to our door. The crust is delicate and golden, the inside is unbelievable soft, airy, and slightly sweet (like biting into a cloud). I thought about slathering butter on it but my family and I skipped it: shokupan was just PERFECT! No need to add anything

Slice the bread into thick pieces, add a bit of butter to a pan, and toast the bread over low heat until one side turns golden and slightly crisp. While it’s still hot, sprinkle a pinch of sea salt on the toasted side. Then spread Japanese red bean paste over the salted side. Paired with a cup of Japanese matcha or Chinese green tea, it makes an absolutely unbeatable afternoon treat.

The best Shokupan outside Japan. Period. My wife and children love – nay, are obsessed – with the bread that tastes the same as some of the bread they had in Tokyo last summer. Particularly our 7 month old baby. Alex delivered it herself too. We feel very lucky to have them here in Bethesda.
