I was surprised to find a restaurant that is Japanese owned and operated in Santa Fe. It got my curiosity high, so I went to check it out. At the entrance, there is a hostess section that didn’t look like much…it looked more like some sort of work station at an office. Certainly not screaming out “the beautiful face of the restaurant” in any way.

To the left of the hostess station is the restaurant. There is a long sushi counter and small table seating. I was taken to a dining room at the back. When I arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty, as it had just opened for the day. But, more customers kept coming in one after another. It seemed like a popular spot among the locals.

I ordered Salmon and Ikura nigiri, Tokyo Roll and Santa Fe Roll. The price is pretty high here. The salmon sushi was very nice and fresh, thick slice of salmon with small amount of sushi rice. The portion size was good. But I wonder the reason why their salmon is so pricey? Tokyo roll was interesting, but I don’t think it was worth the price point. Santa Fe Roll had a little kick to it, which I liked. I thought the price point for this roll was really good, nice quality roll for $8 is a steal.

After the meal, I wanted some hot tea, so I flagged down one of the staffs to order a tea. They had two female staffs working here on this day, one was much friendlier than the other. Neither one of them came to check on me the entire time I was eating… Needless to say, my water was never refilled until they came to clean up the plates. When the friendly one brought me the tea, I asked for their dessert menu. While I was deciding on what to order for dessert, the other waitress brought my check to my table. I guess she was more eager for me to leave than to see if I wanted/needed anything else, like say, dessert? She realized I was looking at the dessert menu, and she took back the check.

Tea cake I ordered for dessert was a dorayaki…I thought I would be getting a real cake for $7, but it was dorayaki which is more of a “snack” and seemed like store bought too.

Interesting thing about this restaurant is that they also had “Cell Phone Free” policy and “Scent Free Zone.” I hope their customers knows this beforehand so that they don’t have to worry about it when they get there…

Overall, it was a good lunch, high quality but pricey. Service was very slow, making my lunch to be dragged out a bit. One of the waitresses was really nice, and the other one was polite but not very friendly. It was not as good of an experience as I wanted it to be, but I am glad I got to try out this spot. Great sushi! The simpler rolls weren’t as good but the chef’s special was very good as were the sushis with green chile.

I have never had a bad dish here. Wonderfully prepared rolls and some of the very best sashimi around. Added with the nice relaxing atmosphere and this quickly became my wife’s and my favorite place to eat when we visit Santa Fe.

Comfortable unassuming place, with a cozy and simple interior. Lots of service for lunch, prompt and helpful. Menu is standard for sushi with not much in the way of fancy maki. Extensive sake assortment. Very nice sushi chef. Well presented dishes.

The teriyaki salmon bento is fantastic. The salmon was moist and fresh. Their tempura menu is exceptionally varied and delicious. We have never had a less than wonderful experience at Shohko. Parking is tight so highly recommend carpooling, if possible.

It’s the best sushi in Santa Fe, very consistently great, Shoko is right there making sushi, and her daughter is in the front greeting people and managing things. I’ve been coming here for 30 years and love this place.
