Best sushi in town. If you want to feel like you just got transported to Japan this is your place. We sat at the bar and was able to chitchat with the owner/chef. He was so sweet and really fun to talk with. Just go, you won’t refuse it!!!

This is hands down the best Japanese restaurant in all of Boston. My girlfriend and I went tonight on our drive back into town and we both have a new favorite overall restaurant. The service was excellent, the server (likely an owner) was extremely nice and utterly adorable. The sushi chef (also probably an owner) was also extremely nice. Every single item we got was above the bar, most of them by a long way. The teriyaki sauce was amazing, and clearly homemade, the katsu sauce was to die for, and the udon was very good with plenty of meat and each different item in the udon was excellent. Finally, as someone who has never really met sushi they liked before, the sweet potato roll was perfect. I understand now why sushi is supposed to be eaten exactly as is, because the balance of everything is perfect.

We will absolutely be returning, as well as sharing this place with our friends!

I was looking for sushi for pick-up in the area and stumbled on this humble restaurant. We ordered the Special for Two and the quality of the food is definitely gonna lure us back here.

Food: Everything in the platter we ordered was high quality and highlighted the unique tastes of the fish. Even the simple rolls like the yellowtail and the california carried their weight and really revealed how good they can be with a little extra care.

Atmosphere: I can’t say too much because I didn’t dine in, but the decor was simple and inviting.

Service: The staff that greeted me did so with a smile and the short exchange was as pleasant as can be. To top it off, the sushi chef was clearly enjoying his work and was doing it all with a smile as well.

The most authentic Japanese food in town!! The owner’s professional skills recalls our memories about Japan. The small Japanese town accent and beautiful folk music really made our day. The food was absolutely perfect with fresh ingredients.

This resturant was perfect! It was really cozy and the chef was so nice! He was really hardworking and the sushi was delicious. I also really recommend the agedashi. The tofu was nice and crispy, so was the tempura. Highly recommend!

Shogun is one of the hidden gems of a place in Newton area. It has authentic Japanese decor and ambiance. It is a warm and welcoming place and has plenty of options for everyone. They have a lot of vegetarian friendly options as well. I would recommend trying their hot Sake during the colder weather. It’s really brings it all together.
Say hi to Ito San when you are in there next!

First try as a take out. Our whole family love those: alligator rolls, vegetable and shrimp tempura, and age-dashi tofu. Tempura was my daughter’s favorite, and she kept saying all were so delicious! We will definitely try other dishes next time!

I am a once a week regular here. Love it, especially for lunch.
Update: They are now permanently closed as of May 5, 2025. I am very sad. I have been coming here for over 12 years. I have brought a number of Japanese natives here to eat and they have said it was an authentic Japanese Sushi house. For me this is “Ito-san dreams of Sushi” in real life (just like “Here Dreams of Sushi” but here in Boston, not Tokyo). Thank you Ito-san and Shogun for 40 years of service to Newton!!!

The food is lovely, tastes like authentic, homemade old school Japanese food. We got the agedashi tofu (nice broth) which was a good portion, and the miso eggplant which was a bit smaller (bit too sweet). The eel sushi was simple and tasty. You got the Japanese ojiisan and obachan cooking it up and serving all on their own on this Saturday night. The atmosphere is relaxing and homey. The service is friendly by obachan, but my only critique is that she needs some help. There were a few tables including ours, waiting awhile to get our check. Otherwise we would take the short drive out to eat here again. I recommend eating here if you have time to sit and relax and enjoy your meal, but not if you need a grab n go.
