After a day of transforming a skeleton of a trailer into a partially sheet rocked and partially lit inhabitation, with some minor framing adjustments, it was time to celebrate…and eat.
SHOGUN JAPANESE GRILL AND SUSHI
Accommodating a large group on short notice…
no problem.
Sunday evening, so there’s that…not busy. But, the place is built for groups of people sitting around large stainless grill tops in a bar type seating style. Kinda fun, especially if you have not ever done a hibachi grill before.
Pricing-wise, this place is up to 1/2 the cost of Benihana! Good News.
That is most, but not all, of the good news…
The atmosphere is cool and authentic feeling, in that amusement park Asian way. Dark and foreboding. You definitely feel like you are visiting this place, not like you are “home.” Now, I am down for that, but I am not from Asia either, so this is like an adventure. Some foreign Bonzai type plants, red paper lanterns with Asian Japanese lettering on them, heavy red wood theme throughout. Some cool blue LED under-lighting on the sushi bar counter area, sweet!
We had 3 grill tables filled up and 3 separate chefs for our whole group.
The Show: Very fun first time experience! Go get you some! It is however, pretty much exactly the same as I remember from when I went to a hibachi when I was 8, and when I was 16, and 18, 32, 40 and uuuuhhhhh now. They have a fun trick of chunking food into the patron’s mouths from the grill while the cooking show is going on. Now, the accuracy of the chef throwing the food is directly proportional to how cool his uniform is. The guy with the cooler hat and more ninja like outfit can aim, the ones that look like an extra cook they pulled in from stocking the cooler…not so much.
There will be a huge FIRE! That’s on purpose, you can feel the heat from across the room. This will probably scare your little kids and did some of mine. Again, this is probably directly related to how much access your kids have to lighting fires at home. That’s on you.
Food: Sushi (some pics included), well when we say Sushi, we are really talking about California Rolls. Wildly popular and very easy to enjoy. Shogun does not disappoint. They look beautiful and have plenty of condiments to help steer the flavor the way you prefer, wasabi, drizzled sauces for your roll of choice, pickled ginger, soy…etc.
The Grilled Stuff: hmmm. Fun. Experiential. Aside from that, pretty flavorless, unless you love soy sauce. Which most of my family does. We had the Teriyaki special grill, so there was a bit of that flavor. But, it is flash grilled and really, not enough time to taste marinated or developed. Right off the grill, extreme heat helps cover a multitude of iniquities. But, if you wait for all of your plate to be populated by the chef serving a show and food sequentially to a large group of people to wait for a “full plate” picture, like I included for you guys (your welcome), the food loses quite a bit of luster.
The Fried rice, is a nice way to bump the price per plate up $3, is fun to watch them make and half of the show, really. But, Chinese take-out rivals the flavor and composition of this rice pretty easily.
The Steak was, surprisingly, cooked well (Med Rare) and was also tasty beef. Kudos.
Chicken and Shrimp spent a little too much time in the sun.
Plenty of food (they are generous with the fried rice, whether you ordered it or not), like I said they are going to make fried rice for SOMEBODY, it is half of the show. So you have to make a certain amount or it just falls flat in the presentation.
Definitely worth doing. Come hungry. Leave your palate at the door. And enjoy some laughs with family and friends.
SHOGUN IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST PLACE for Hibachi! Their food, flavor and prices are top tier! We will NEVER go anywhere else for hibachi! See y’all again soon!
I love that they had bento in the evening’s and I had the calamari bento which was amazing. It was huge though. I didn’t want rice so they were kind to give me more vegetables instead.
