Just the right amount of heat well balanced with flavor. The jalapeño fries were also amazing. Definitely give them a try, you will not be disappointed.
Doom scrolling on my bed in Orlando, Florida, the state where the humidity hugs you harder than your abuela and the mosquitoes vote in local elections!! Suddenly…the “Worth It” algorithm gods blessed my screen…a legendary chicken wing spot in Long Beach called Shlap Muan!
Now listen…
A normal human would say, “Wow! that looks good” and continue scrolling. But not me! I’m cheap! And these were the lowest priced chicken wing on the episode…but I’m also a chicken wing Aficionado! A connoisseur you could say. A man whose love language is crispy skin and sauces!!
So obviously…
I hopped on a plane and accidentally on purpose …flew across the country for some Chicken wings…
No big deal right?! Just a 2,500-mile wing craving!
Okay fine…I was actually flying in for a cruise…
BUT THE WINGS WERE ABSOLUTELY on the itinerary!!!
After landing at LAX, we jumped on the highway and immediately got slapped in the face with classic LA rainy traffic…. which by the way turns the entire city into an apocalyptic pandemic event apparently…
An hour and a half of brake lights, hydroplaning Priuses, and Waze screaming RECALCULATING!!!!just to chase a wing…. That’s dedication we had!
That’s love! True Love! That’s… definitely a personality trait at this point.
We finally pull into the lot which was pretty full…but we snagged a spot, walk in, and…
NO LINE.
Kinda Empty….
Suspiciously empty….
I thought maybe we’d entered the wrong restaurant because I expected chaos! wings flying, workers chanting ancient Cambodian seasoning spells or SOMETHING!
But nope.
Just a chill vibe, a clean shop, and the promise of greatness!
The Wings:
We ordered three of the most hyped flavors:
1. Cambodian Dirt (the star of the show)
I took my first bite…
And angels didn’t just sing…they harmonized.
These wings were crispy, juicy, and seasoned like the chef unlocked a cheat code in the wing universe!
Tangy. Slightly sweet. Perfect spice.
Do I dare say it?
…yeah. I’m going to say it!
Umami.
It’s like if lemon pepper went backpacking in Asia, found itself spiritually, and came back enlightened! ♂️
2. WOK Wings – Dirty Elvis
Immediately transported me to the alleyways of Seoul at 1AM — you know, where all the best decisions in life are made….
They reminded me of a Korean fried chicken soy garlic hybrid:
Sweet. Sticky. Savory.
The glaze clung to my fingers like caramel pork sauce, making me question all my life choices, but in a good way!!
Perfect crunch. Perfect cook.
Finger licking? Bro… I licked the soul off my fingers! ️
3. Water Buffalo
The owner’s wife mentioned she hates the vinegar in typical buffalo sauce … and honestly… SAME!
This version?
Creamy. Mildly spicy. Slight tang. ALL comfort!
It was like buffalo sauce grew up, healed its childhood trauma, went to therapy, and reached self actualization! ☮️
THE ULTIMATE POWER MOVE!!!
This is where my wing sommelier instincts kicked in…
I took a Cambodian Dirt wing…
Dipped it into the Water Buffalo sauce…
And my taste buds literally filed a positive enthusiastic Yelp review inside my brain.
That combo?
Perfection!!!
If God serves wings in heaven, this is the combo He uses!!
Would I Fly Back?
Let me make this clear…
Shlap Muan isn’t the fanciest spot.
It’s simple.
It’s clean.
It’s unassuming….
But the wings?
The wings are WORTH THE FLIGHT! ✈️
I would absolutely burn airline miles, fight LA traffic, and dodge angry California drivers again for another round!!
Service? Awesome!
People? Friendly!
Wings? Life changing!
10/10. Would cross the country again in the name of chicken Shlap Muan mama for these wings! Must try!!
The Dirty Elvis wings were absolutely delicious!!
We also got the Habenero & spicy garlic wings which were also so great.
While we were there I believe the owner was there and she was so sweet and kind. She brought over our food & extra trays for bones. we I looooove this place. I am still thinking of those Dirty Elvis wings omg.
Chicken was juicy fresh and crispy on the outside and the garlic noodles were tasty with a tangy hint at the end of your bite.
The jalapeños wings and garlic noodles were a perfect combination. The spicy elephant was full of peanut flavor and a perfect texture to the sauce, not spicy but not sweet just full of flavor.
Best chicken wings I’ve had in a very long time. To be frank, there’s levels to this extra crunchy life. Shlap Muan checks all of them.
The flavors are unique and proprietary to Shlap, my personal favorites are Spicy Cambodian Dirt and Elvis. Great sized wings Not a single miss on any of the flavors I have tried, I’ve tried all but one. The amount of wings vs the price are well balanced. I’ve returned several times, some times multiple days in a row. The hottest flavor I tried was spicy Spicy Garlic. I’ve also purchased their seasoning. Use it on everything I can.
The noodles, in any variant are absolutely worth the money, great proportion on all the food here. Spicy Garlic shrimp noodles are worth every penny.
The smoothies, slushies and Thai tea are great and pair well with the food here.
TLDR; NICEST PEOPLE, BEST WINGS, DRINKS ARE FIRE AND GARLIC SHRIMP FRIED NOODLES WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.
The Cambodian Dirt did not have any lemograss taste to it–boo.
Dirty Elvis was good, it didn’t remind me of Khmer flavors though.
Maybe the Tanarind Tiger would…
A bit far for me and I normally don’t eat fried wings or noodles. Even so, good taste adventure.
If you like fried wings, noodles, rice, this is a great place to load up. Add Khmai tea to the order. Bon apetit!
