One of the best authentic hunan restaurants I’ve been to in the US (and I live in nyc). Literally tasted like I was in hunan china where my mom is from. So good. If you are looking for authentic flavorful/spicy chinese food, you won’t find better. Wild chili beef was my fav (but if u have low/moderate spice tolerance would ask for less spicy)

Very authentic Hunan cuisine. That spicy feeling is spot on ️. They also offer non-spicy food with nutritious soup . They allow BYOB, with various cups for wines . Highly recommend!

Everything was delicious and super flavorful! The chopped chili fish head was the highlight—perfectly seasoned, and my friend and I finished the whole fish between the two of us. The stir-fried beef with wild pickled peppers was amazing too

So good! I was by myself so I kind of ate a unique meal, not very classic. Had the wild chili beef and the shrimp fried rice.
Seemed a little bit expensive when I saw the menu but it had so much shrimp the $17 price tag was well worth it. The beef was great too, really hot and sour spicy taste. Quality of the produce seemed really high, too.
Staff was kind enough to tone down the spice for my beef and also offer a knife/fork. It was already spicy enough for me!
I’d come back for a proper full meal with more people and eat whole fish. Luke

As soon as I walked in, it felt like I was back in China. I lived there for seven years, and the decor, the smells, the atmosphere—everything felt truly authentic. We ordered the eggplant dish (they kindly toned down the spice for us) and the cumin beef—both were excellent and full of real Chinese flavor. The round tables with lazy Susans made it feel even more like the China I remember. The staff were warm, welcoming, and even helped me park and navigate the lot when we left. Great food, great people, highly recommended!

The Hunan dishes at Shiyu are actually okay—the flavors are bold and generally authentic. We enjoyed the chili pepper dishes and the meat was cooked well.
However, the complete lack of service and unbearable noise level made it a poor overall experience. No one greeted or checked on us, and we had to wave down staff multiple times for simple requests. The dining area was extremely loud—it was hard to have a conversation.
If you’re getting takeout and don’t care about service or noise, the food is passable. But for a sit-down meal, the environment and non-existent service really detract from it.

Shiyu restaurant was skeptical at first because of the outside being old rusty and looking creepy, inside it was empty but reminded me of local chinese restaurants, nostalgia. When we walked in a old lady greeted us and brought us over to our table and asked which drink we would like, while later the boss came over to introduce himself and told us abt his hometown and the spice levels he would recommend. All workers had smiles on their faces and the atmosphere was quiet which is enjoyable after a long, noisy day. Food came within minutes and when the rice was eaten, savoury flavours entered my mouth and so did miracles. Would absolutely recommend!!

Incredibly authentic hunan cuisine. Loved the pork intestine with preserved chilis and the cumin pork w/ cauliflower (honestly don’t know the names because my parents ordered). The parents loved it which is how u know it’s good because my mom is from hunan and quite picky about her Chinese food in America.

Very authentic Chinese/Hunan food. I born and grew up in Hunan and I loved their food especially the pig stomach. I come twice in a week while we visit Honolulu.
