The first thing we noticed when we entered the restaurant was a strong, unpleasant smell. Since we had specifically gone there to try the food, we still decided to dine in. We ordered chai, Mysore masala dosa, chole bhature, and samosas. None of the dishes really stood out. The food was just average; not terrible, but definitely not worth making the drive for.
The chai in particular had almost no flavor, and we couldn’t even finish it. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, especially given the hype. There are many better options in the Katy/Richmond area where you can find great food in a much more pleasant dining environment.
The smell inside the restaurant was also concerning, as it raises questions about hygiene and food safety standards. For context, we visited on a Saturday morning around 11:30 AM, so it wasn’t late in the day or close to closing time.
Based on this experience, I wouldn’t prefer to visit again.
First thing I want to address is the cleanliness of the restaurant.. it’s smells horrible by the bathrooms. I do not suggest sitting anywhere near the bathrooms.
The last time I came, this was also an issue.
The tables do not get wiped down quick enough. Maybe designating someone to just wipe down the tables or possibly hiring another person..
As far as the food, it is good but the portions are ridiculous..the dosa’s are never filled. I drew a line on the dosa picture to show how much of the actual dosa had stuff in it. The chat I got (don’t remember the name) was small, and pricey. It was delicious, but not worth the price.
Would I come back? I am not sure. They need to do something about the bathrooms and the smell.
The area where they have the silverware could also use some cleaning up.
Update Dec 2025: still the same old reliable fresh food, inexpensive but tasty. We had the Dosa/Vada/Idli combination and the Mini Thali with puris. Both were excellent- see pic
I ordered the Dahi Puri and the Rava Masala Dosa. The Dahi Puri was excellent as always. This time, the potato filling for the dosa was served on the side instead of inside, so you scoop it into the dosa yourself. Different, but still delicious and very satisfying.
The restaurant is in a great location near Hillcroft in the Gandhi District, surrounded by other Indian restaurants and grocery stores. Service is friendly, prices are reasonable, and there’s plenty of parking in the large shared lot. A solid spot for dosas, puris, and quick Indian bites.
They allow all kinds of customisation with the food that you order. However, the online order did not work for us (forever in loading mode), so don’t waste your time just go to the counter to order.
The food was quite good and we are all happy with our choices:
Chloe Bhature 5/5
Rawa Masala Dosa 5/5
Chaat Potato and Paneer 3/5
Pani Puri 4/5
Their Pav Bhaji Dosa, and especially the Samosa Chaat are outstanding — full of authentic flavor and always fresh. Every time I visit, the food reminds me why I keep coming back.
The prices are very reasonable compared to other restaurants, which makes it even better for families. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant is clean and well maintained.
It does get busy on weekends, but there’s plenty of seating space, so the wait is usually manageable.
If you’re looking for great vegetarian Indian food with authentic taste and good value, Shiv Sagar is definitely the place to go!
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to dine in person, and I was amazed at how bustling the restaurant was. The lively atmosphere only added to the experience. The staff was incredibly polite and kind, making me feel welcome and appreciated.
During my visit, I tried the Raj Kachori and Maharaja Dosa. The Raj Kachori was a standout crispy, tangy, and bursting with flavors. The Maharaja Dosa was equally impressive, perfectly crispy and filled with a flavorful potato filling.
Overall, Shiv Sagar offers an authentic Indian dining experience with a wide variety of dishes that cater to all tastes. The combination of delicious food, friendly service, and vibrant atmosphere makes it a must visit for anyone craving authentic Indian cuisine.
You can’t go wrong with most things on the menu. The restaurant is located in the Hillcroft area and has a good amount of parking in the lot. It can get pretty busy but usually we have always been able to find a place. Previously you could only order by going to the cashier up at the front but now you can order directly from your phone via QR to your table
