Despite having an 8 PM reservation, we weren’t seated until 8:30 PM. The lobby was overcrowded, and the party we were eventually seated with had already been waiting over an hour.
The organization didn’t improve once we were at the table. It took 20 minutes just to have our food orders taken after our drinks arrived. The delays were so significant that the other half of our hibachi table walked out before the chef even started. This left just two of us at a large grill, which completely deflated the experience. When our chef finally arrived—a full hour after we were seated—he admitted the restaurant was severely overbooked.
The most frustrating part was being told we were on a “timer.” After our food order was taken, we were informed we would have only 20 minutes to eat and vacate the table once the chef finished. Being rushed through a meal because the restaurant is running behind is unacceptable.
It is a shame because the food was actually good, but the environment was too chaotic to enjoy it. New Year’s Eve is a night when guests rely on their reservations. Shinto’s decision to overbook resulted in a rushed, stressful experience that wasn’t worth the cost. I reached out to management privately and never received a response.
We were seated between two large parties, off to the side, with the chef’s back turned toward us the entire time. A cart was also pushed in front of us, completely blocking our view. We came for the hibachi experience, but we couldn’t see or enjoy any part of it.
Even the chef expressed confusion, saying he didn’t understand why we had been seated there. By the time the rest of our food made it to our plates, the rice and mushrooms were already cold. I ordered chicken and shrimp but received only six shrimp, after the chef served the rest of the party at the table. It truly felt like we were being overlooked.
Service from our waiter was equally frustrating. I asked for more dressing and never received it—yet he continued to check on and cater to the other party beside us. I had to ask the manager, who kindly brought it. I also requested plastic silverware from the waiter, which he acknowledged but never brought. Again, I had to ask the manager to get it for us.
At the end of our meal, I asked the waiter for the check and boxes. He brought the check but didn’t bring any boxes. A young employee bussing a nearby table was the one who finally helped us.
Overall, this visit was extremely disappointing. What was meant to be a special celebration for my son turned into an uncomfortable and frustrating experience. I hope management takes steps to improve seating decisions, service attention, and overall guest experience.
The biggest problem is the staff and the manager. On one occasion our pickup order of sushi sat for nearly two hours due to the kitchen not knowing they had two non-sushi orders to prepare with it. The staff were absolutely clueless telling us they were preparing it when they weren’t, and the manager (owner?) acted like it wasn’t a big deal that the food has been sitting out for so long.
On our last visit we watched as the staff sat at the end of the bar laughing and carrying on as if they didn’t have jobs to do. Our waitress never asked for a drink order, instead came back to take our food order without ever asking about drinks. Then, I had to go to the bar where the staff had gathered just to inquire when my drink would be arriving (she forgot). Our waitress proceeded to slam the drink down next to me without so much as an apology. She just wasn’t very friendly, didn’t seem like she had any training at all, and didn’t make it a pleasant experience. The sushi chefs never once asked us how anything was or even acknowledged us as we were leaving the sushi bar. In the past they made an effort. And once again, that same manager was walking around without a care in the world. Place could’ve been burning down and he wouldn’t notice.
My wife said the bathroom was… kinda gross. One sink wasn’t draining, a bottle of cleaner was left sitting out, the automatic soap dispensers weren’t working and instead they had a pump container on the counter.
Not the professional restaurant atmosphere we used to love about this place. It’s become an overrated, shell of its former self with careless staff. So disappointed as we really tried to give it additional chances. It’s time to look elsewhere.
We also went at about 5 pm and we were a party of sic and got right in, thank goodness.
