Mango lassy was good!
But overall ok place
I went alone as part of my usual Friday routine to feel the taste of Indian food and finally got a taste of one, a famous one though, in the location.
I had a plate of aloo tikki chana chaat and a glass of mango lassi.
Aloo tikki chana chaat tasted obviously like the usual American-Indian fusion with less or no spices on it but the chutney (sweet red and sour green) added some extra Indian magic to it.
Mango lassi was a bit less thick as expected in its consistency. But the good part is it wasn’t so sweet like that served in most of the similar grade restaurants in the downtown Chicago area.
Although I had visited there alone, Mr. Arnold, my server, gave me company by talking to me about life and his journey in the hotel management field. It felt great to talk with someone from your own country and learning about their struggles to make a better living and upgrade their lives in the United States.
Mr. Arnold gracefully served me two little samosas from the buffet menu as a token of respect.
This made me think what value & role does the ‘costumer relation’ play while setting up a business. Although, this may be a gesture to attract value to a business but I foresee his socialising skills as part of having a great business acumen and wish him all the best for his future.
I also took a look at their co-venture, the “Aashiyana Banquets” where one can organise bday parties, big Indian marriages and other corporate events.
In particular, the parathas seemed undercooked and had the consistency of reheated frozen bread. When I raised this concern with the waiter/owner, I was advised to order them as “well-done paratha,” which was surprising, as properly prepared parathas should not require special instructions to be fully cooked.
Additionally, the paneer sabji was not at all spicy even when it was requested to be spicy. While we raised concerns, we were told that I need to order them as “excessively uneatable spicy”. This is the most stupid arguments, I have heard from any Punjabi restaurant owners.
Given the large number of positive reviews, I was genuinely surprised by this experience. I hope the restaurant takes customer feedback constructively and focuses on improving food quality and consistency.
In the past, I fancied Thai and Latin flavors. However, Indian food has now become my favorite! Shikara has delightfully motivated my family and I to continue expanding our quest for delectable flavors! Whether for business, brunch or dinner date, check out Shikara. You won’t be disappointed!
