I have travelled the world extensively over 40 years. I ate at all restaurants ranging from pop & mom’s to Michelin three stars. This is my honest review of the restaurant Shibata in Geneva, Switzerland.

A wonderful Japanese restaurant run by a lovely couple – the chef, originally from the north of Japan, and his French wife who takes care of the service. Both are extremely welcoming, regularly coming to the table to explain the dishes and make sure everything is perfect.

There is a small sheltered terrace, pleasant in summer though slightly close to the street, and an indoor dining room decorated with elegant Geisha posters – simple but charming.

The menu is creative, going beyond traditional Japanese cuisine with refined fusion touches. Highlights of our dinner included:
• Scallops with fresh mozzarella and Umenori sauce – beautifully combining warm seared scallops with cool mozzarella, elevated by the acidity of the Japanese plum sauce. A very successful dish.
• Mackerel sashimi – strong flavors perfectly balanced with celery.
• Yuzu Cacio e Pepe noodles with burrata – a delightful bridge between Japanese and Italian traditions.
• “007” shrimps – perfectly seared with assorted vegetables, simply delicious.

We ended with two outstanding desserts: a matcha tiramisu (substituting tea for coffee, very elegant) and a fruit dessert with delicate biscuit tuiles and intense-flavored berries. Both were excellent.

Prices are not low but remain very reasonable considering the quality, originality, and care put into every dish. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking to go beyond traditional Japanese cuisine while still enjoying top-quality food in a warm and friendly setting.

An exquisite Japanese restaurant run by a husband and wife team. Great attention to detail and the food is delicious – flavours abound! Everything is made from scratch by the Hokkaido-born chef, who also incorporates dishes unique to his home region in the regularly changing menu. This beautiful rose-shaped sashimi and daikon (pictured) starter to mark the springtime was a delight!

Excellent Japanese restaurant offering creative dishes that differ from the classical sushis. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. Book in advance because the place is small.

Wonderful, great and refined Japanese cuisine. I had a steak tartare, Japanese way, very subtle taste a bit spicy but just enough. Go there and help them go thru that difficult period!!!!!
