The 3 nimrods are still searching for the perfect KC BBQ. This week we tried Bates City BBQ oddly enough not in Bates City but in Shawnee Kansas. Easy to find on Quivira near Shawnee mission parkway with plenty of parking. Each of the nimrods ordered the mixed plate with choice of two meats plus two bones. The onion rings were great! And I also enjoyed their sauces. I’m not a real big rib guy but everyone agreed that the ribs were the best thing on the plate including me, if you like tender fall off the bone ribs this is foryou. The brisket and burnt ends were a bit dry even slathered in sauce. The sports decor was fun and the dining room was comfortable.

Love the food for taste, but I’m not a fan of “fall off the bone” ribs. For me, ribs need to have a little pull and chew, but that’s just my opinion. Meat was good without sauce, but sauce was very good too if you like that on your meat. Price can’t be beat on Thursdays! I’ll be back.

Drove here from Olathe for the Sunday rib special. We ARE NOT disappointed! I got the sauce on the side. You could eat these ribs without sauce but the sauce is great! We liked it!!

Love this place! Absolute hidden treasure, if you haven’t tried them yet!!! My plate of 2 meats and 1/2ribs for just $13! Fries are handmade!!! Cool atmosphere, friendly staff! (Even Hamm’s beer )

When I was pregnant with my daughter (11 years ago) I would crave BBQ from Bates and come almost daily. My family lives in Shawnee whereas I moved out of state years ago. Whenever I am home- 4 days this time- this is an absolute must eat at place. I ate two of my meals here. I also bought BBQ sauce (which they wrapped nicely) to take home in my luggage. My mom always brings me sauce from here for my own ribs to satisfy my hometown craving. Their food is the absolute best. The brothers who own the place are kind, knowledgeable, and make some yummy burnt ends. Everything is gluten free so if you have food allergies like myself you don’t have to fret. The lunch specials are always delicious. Food is hot, customer service is on point, atmosphere is authenticity fun and sassy: Bates is the BEST BBQ place in town, in my humble (and correct opinion).

As a first-time visitor, I was impressed by the establishment’s cleanliness and attention to detail, particularly with regards to the wall decor. The customer service was outstanding, and the food was impressive, with the ribs being fall-off-the-bone tender and the fries being equally tasty. My four-year-old daughter innocently asked, Mom, why are these so good? As a family, we have had the pleasure of dining at numerous restaurants throughout the city, which has allowed us to cultivate our culinary preferences. In short, the food was exquisite. Let me get straight to the point; the ribs were delicious, fall off the bone tender. Everything else disappointed. We love fries but these were so undercooked and greasy. Even in the photo you can clearly see the grease on them. The burn ends had a nice smokiness to them but they were tiny little things and really kind of hard. Brisket didn’t have a lot of flavor and was as thin as sandwich meat. I know a lot of places cut it that thin, which I don’t understand, because nobody does that when they make brisket at home. Sides were average. I feel like the mac and cheese is probably made in house but it tastes like the potato salad came out of a carton. All in all I would go back and eat the ribs again and maybe give the fries a second try. (I was there on December 9th on the recommendation of a friend who goes weekly for ribs and fries).

Been eating here for over a decade . So dang good . The fries are amazing . There’s also an artist named Derick that works there and his work is hanging in the back . You can buy a pencil drawing by him that looks like a photo . Talent!!! Smoking meat and making the world a bit more beautiful.

FINALLY got around to trying this spot out and I’m so glad I did! It was delicious! Great prices too! I ordered the rib meat sandwich with fries! If going with a small group you only need one order of fries. It’s delicious and with it being so close I’ll be back again!

BBQ and the sauces are all different at each place and too many great places in the area to choose from. You should try Bates and judge for yourself. Pulled pork, sauce and onion rings were pretty good. Sausage was not a favorite. Ribs were good too.
