Located in the heart of Nashville, our Chinese BBQ restaurant offers a unique and flavorful dining experience. Specializing in authentic Chinese barbecue, we serve a variety of grilled meats/vegetable & traditional dishes that are perfect for both casual meals & special occasions. Our cozy atmosphere and friendly service make us a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike.
Shaokao is the Chinese translation of barbecue.
Shaokao is a cooking method that involves grilling, smoking, or roasting meat, often marinated or seasoned with a blend of spices and sauces, over an open flame. Meats like pork, beef, chicken, and lamb are skewered and grilled to perfection, resulting in a delicious, smoky flavor that’s both savory and slightly charred.

So we dined at this New Authentic Chinese Street Food Restaurant called Shao Kao in Midtown Nashville. OMG, so incredible and a fun atmosphere. The food reminded us of being in Chinatown New York City. You know it’s great when the restaurant was full Chinese/Asian Diners, and we were the only 2 non Asians…lol
They make their noodles fresh. They have Dim Sum, Authentic Chinese BBQ, Soups, Noodle & Rice Dishes, Specials, and Large Sharing dishes. This is more of a sharing experience, because dishes come out as they become ready. The prices are really reasonable, like in Chinatown. No matter your diet or likes there is something for you.
Location is – 1812 Hayes St, Nashville

Authentic Chinese BBQ in Nashville is absolutely amazing! The meat is very tender and juicy, and the flavors are truly authentic with a unique Chinese-style BBQ sauce that you don’t often find elsewhere. My family and I really love this place. Our favorites are the grilled pork feet, lamb skewers, lamb hot pot, and the big plate chicken (Da Pan Ji). Everything tastes delicious and feels just like real Chinese barbecue. Highly recommended!

We stopped by Shaokao today around 4:30, and the place was pretty quiet with only two other tables. It was raining heavily, so finding street parking right in front was a nice surprise.
We ordered a mix of items to get a good feel for the menu: shredded potato salad, pig feet, shumai (wouldn’t recommend), pork ribs, and several skewers (lamb, beef, bacon enoki, yellow fish, and intestines – also wouldn’t recommend). We finished with the mango shaved ice, which ended up being the best thing we had.
Food came out fast and the service was fine, although it would’ve helped if plates were cleared as we finished them since the table got crowded quickly.
Overall, the food just didn’t hit the mark for us, and nothing stood out enough to make us want to come back. Probably a one-and-done.

Food was just ok… not worth the price. It was surprisingly more expensive than NYC prices. Service was subpar… they definitely prioritized Chinese speaking customers; other tables’ food orders came before ours and they don’t follow up with you after you make an orders.
If you are curious about trying here for the first time, its worth a consideration, but you should prioritize other restaurants.
I don’t recommend ordering the beef skewers. You may end up with a cut of meat thats impossible to chew.

This place is a hidden gem for now. Authentic Chinese Street Food and nothing else like it here in Nashville. Tried mainly the skewers on my first visit but will go back and look forward to trying some of the entrees and noodle dishes very soon. My only wish was some dipping sauce available to go with the skewers but it was still tasty and sauces usually aren’t an item in the street food market so that make sense. Highly recommend this spot!

Couldn’t have been more disappointed than I was on my visit to Shaokao. I first heard about this from social media foodies like Nashville Hidden Gems. I’m still confused because a lot of people have given this place good reviews, but I thought it was awful. We ordered a ton of different items and the only ones that were edible were the Duck (with the bao buns), the beef skewers, and the beef & peppers with rice. The Duck was the best item, and the others were just fine. We also got noodles that had a horrible texture, and the broth was so oily and greasy it was gross. The shrimp Shumai was so awful that my friend had to spit it in her napkin at the table in order to avoid throwing up. We also got the eggplant dish, which had so much garlic that it made me have a bad taste in my mouth for hours. As my one friend said, the best thing we had there was the Diet Coke. Horribly disappointed in this experience as I had high expectations. I am honestly unsure how they have so many good reviews.

We’ve been wanting to have authentic Chinese skewers here, and finally—it’s in Nashville! I can confidently say this spot serves the most delicious and authentic skewers I’ve had, even better than the ones I’ve tried in bigger cities.
First off, the atmosphere is cute, poppin’, and super eye-catching. The staff are professional, welcoming, and genuinely friendly. My favorites were the beef, lamb, squid, Asparagus skewers, and pig’s feet—each one was incredibly flavorful and just melted in my mouth.
Their other kitchen dishes are also solid, and don’t miss the fried milk—it’s a unique treat, perfect as a starter or a dessert.
As an Asian person who’s in the same industry, I can truly say they care about every little detail in this restaurant. If they keep it up, I can definitely see them becoming even more successful.
I highly recommend this place to everyone. Go try it—you won’t regret it!

We went on a Friday night. There was a wait, parking was hard to find around there too. We got in and started off with beer and appetizers. I really like the squid stick, the beef stick was good too. The fried milk tasted like fried sweet tofu. The noodles in the soup were made in house, texture was great. We got the pork rice dish too, all the meat was tender but everything was kind of sweet.

NEED more places like this in Nashville!! The food here is absolutely amazing. Need to start this off raving about the skewers; I ordered the pork belly, lamb, beef, squid, and chicken wings. All of them were perfectly cooked with this addicting seasoning on top of them.
I then ordered the crispy duck noodles. It was also very tasty. There could have been a little more salt in it.
On the side, I ordered the cucumber salad with sesame paste. I wanted something refreshing—which it was—but I did not enjoy just the sesame paste. I assumed it would have some other seasonings on it.
The staff here is absolutely amazing as well. There were only two people working an almost full restaurant, yet they were attentive, caring, and quick with service. I am definitely coming back here.

I’ve only ate from here one time, the first meal I had was on point. I had the “Shrimp Curry with Rice” and the “Peel Shrimp”. Both were good to me. I’m going back here for the “Yellow Fish” Dish next. I wanna try that.
